Affirmative Action is a Joke

"Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you're a man, you take it."
-Malcom X

Affirmative action laws are one of the most hurtful and blatantly racist crimes that have evern been perpetrated in a civilized culture. While it ranks behind such atrocities as the holocaust, slavery or internment camps, the fallout from it is still developing. I'm not sure we'll be able to fully quantify the damage these laws have done to our nation and our society for decades.

Affirmative action, unless you've been living under a rock, is government sponsered hiring quotas meant to give minorities a greater chance of getting hired. Problems arise, however, when companies are forced to pass over more-qualified applicants in order to meet the quotas. Affirmative action is also commonly applied in the education world with colleges often lowing admissions standards in order to make it easier for minorities to get in. Is that fair? I certainly don't think so.

What kind of ideals are we promoting when we say with our laws that skin color or ethnic background is more important than qualifications? Young people who are a part of a minority are getting the message that they don't have to work as hard because they will get a break. What a great disservice these laws are to them. We're not teaching them what's its like to face adversity, to work hard and earn what is given to them. We're giving them a handout. We're denying these young people some of life's most important lessons, such as what it is like to fail and how to deal with adversity.

What's also scary is when affirmative action is applied to jobs such as emergency medical technicians, police officers and firemen. Do we really want to place less qualified people in these jobs because of their skin color? Maybe that's a question you should ask yourself the next time you pass a car accident or a house fire.

Its fairly obvious that affirmative action can also exacerbate already tense racial relations betweens caucasians and minorities. Who couldn't understand the frustration of a caucasian whose job was given to a person from a minority just because that person is from a minority? And lets not forget that affirmative action also applies to women, meaning the only people left out of this program are white males.

Why do we need affirmative action? Why can't we say that any hiring done on the basis of skin color, creed or ethnic background is illegal and enforce that? A company should hire based on the qualification of the applicant and never anything else. It should be apparent that people from minorities can certainly succeed in today's world. Prominent examples would be Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice. These two have been able to rise to two of the most powerful positions in our country without the aid of affirmative action. They did so based on their accomplishments.

Affirmative action has been a cancer in our society for long enough. It is a hypocritical law in that it is somehow supposed to make things equal by unequal hiring and admitting practices. It needs to be thrown out the window so that our society is finally free to hire persons or admit them based on their qualifications and not the color of their skin.

You’re right that an anti-merit system is damaging people on either side of the enthusiastically enforced racial divide. Rewarding failure, and punishing success is sure to lead to more failure and less success. It is only official aggression which could perpetuate a policy of this kind. Those who advocate an anti-merit system which only aggression can sustain are obviously grossly immoral. Call it anti-diversity or anti-minority or anything else; it is still the true and the good, to want a pro-merit or pro-ability society. The reason why oficials chose race as the point of division, and scholars cheer them on, is because it makes for irreconcilable hostilities, and because they have given up on the class war which once nourished their hopes of dictatorship. An all-merit society is in the majority interest at the very least, but it does not serve the goals of absolute power-seekers. The use of aggression to establish government cultural institutions is what allows irrational objectives like these to be served.

Furthermore, the fact that advocates of Affirmative Action do all they can do tear down minorities who DO succeed on merit (such as Condi Rice and Colin Powell) proves that their goal is not the advancement of minority races but rather the appearance of advancement, so that those races will forever be in their debt when election day comes along.

Argh! I can’t think about this any more… it makes me want to search Google for “kill Michael Moore game” in the hopes that someone has created a Flash game where I can stick his head in a blender.

Well said.  This issue really gets to me.  One minor quibble: strict quotas are technically illegal, so Affirmative Action programs don’t directly use them.  Instead they give a handicap to all those who are not a member of a minority (or give an advantage to those who are… same thing).  A quota would be like “We cannot admit/hire any white kids until we have admitted/hired a certain number or percentage of black kids.”

Regardless, AA makes minority applicants seem more valuable, while at the same time implying that they are inferior.  It would be like wanting to an adopt a child with Down’s Syndrome “because those retarded kids are so cute.” People feel the need to pander to under qualified minorities because “it’s the right thing to do.” By lowering the standards to admit under qualified minorities, these institutions are treating them as window dressing, designed to make their classrooms appear color-balanced and increase their “diversity.”

In my perfect world, Affirmative Action means that colleges send representatives to high schools in poor neighborhoods to give talks on the benefits of going to college and encourage the kids to apply.

You are right about how minorities become like hostages to the politicians and professional race-baiters, if I may take it further; these representatives (most often unelected) need them to be in a continual pathetic state. Encouragement of dependency is a common policy for those who want to rule, and who see weakness that could look up to such leaders. Once we have the overwhelming majority in this state of crying out for their quota on an ethnic basis, there will be no call for freedom. The courts say quotas are illegal, but they avoid the issue by saying that it is only a fixed predetermined number which can be called that. Yet if a place decides that the percentage of some minorities is too low, and they decide to increase it even for a short time, the new number is the current quota.
