ABC/AP Whitewashes Toledo Riot

Sigh...

White Supremacists Riot?

I hate having to defend the Nazis racist idiots, but if the news is going to be reported is should be reported factually.

The "White Supremacists" did not riot in Toledo. They acquired all the necessary permits and permissions and attempted to stage a protest even of the sort that is perfectly acceptable and legal under America's free speech laws. They were met with an angry mob that threatened, burned, looted and destroyed.

Did that mob have a right to be angry? You betcha. Nazism is a hateful ideology that should be met with scorn and derision.

Did that mob have a right to burn, loot and destroy? Absolutely not. By doing so they actually helped the Nazi cause by actually playing into the stereotype the Nazis were using to characterize them.

I'm not one to defend Nazis, but lets lay blame upon those to whom it is due.

Update:

The ABC News headline shown above is still online here.

The rioters didn’t go after the Nazis, they attacked the police. They just wanted to riot, no reason or reasoning necessary, they just needed an excuse.

That headline is disgusting.  It is so misleading that you have to wonder how it got past the powers that be.  The only reason is that the powers that be don’t want to tell everyone that BLACK people rioted in response to nothing more than a planned nazi march.  The march never took place, the chief of police cancelled it, and what does he get for this wise decision.  A mad mob of do nothing gang bangers and other delinquents (who were black) hell bent on causing destruction and attacking authorities.  At that point, it had little to do with the nazis and much more to do with the rioters lack of discipline and respect.

What an embarassment for the AP and ABC, reporting the news the way they wish it would happen.

I think the Ohio Nazi’s are smiling right now with just the reaction they wanted, dang-it.

From the link:

Using a screen capture was necessary, because both the Associated Press and ABC News have now changed the title to the accurate statement that “Anti-White Supremacists” were the ones who rioted. The truth is, as the first sentence stated, that the riot was conducted by hundreds of protestors against the neo-Nazis. (The neo-Nazis numbered some two dozen people, and did not conduct their rally because the local police could not “guarantee their safety.")

So if ABC and AP corrected their “news piece” it means that either ABC/AP did it on their own (Good) or changed it only after they were called on it. (Bad)

As none of us were at the Nazi march, we don’t know what happened. We have a story from Fox News saying that the ‘black mob’ instigated the riot, and we have a story from the AP saying that the white supremacists instigated it.

I don’t know which one is true. You, apparently, do. Unless you are Nazis or residents of Toledo, I’m not sure how that’s possible.

Be an imperialist; enlighten me.

It’s easy Dave.  Read other sources other than the AP and FoxNews.  Try this article for starters.

How ignorant of you to suggest that the only ones who can comment on this are Nazis or residents of Toledo.  If that were the case, opinion pages and blogs would cease to exist.

I doubt Dave could be enlightened by anything less than a 500,000,000 candle power spotlight falling on his head from high altitude. Dave, I actually saw a mob of blacks throwing rocks at police cars, actual footage on TV, so unless you’re claiming if was trick photography you need to look for a tall building with spotlights on top to loiter under.

Ryan G,

Just like you can’t yell “Fire!” in a theater, you can’t yell “Mein Fuhrer” in Toledo.

Where the hell did you come up with that?  Who made you judge and jury of what is right to say and what is not?  You have to take the good free speech with the bad free speech, but let it be known that this a matter of FREE speech.  I may not like what they say, but I’ll fight for their right to say it.

And blaming the Nazis for this riot is like blaming 9/11 on the U.S. for having bases in Saudi Arabia (and being serious about it).  The Nazis may have been there, but there presence alone is no reason for what the rioters did.  IMO, the people that rioted have no more respect for others than the Nazis.

You’re right, Brandon.  Violence isn’t the answer.  Those stupid Englishman!  They should have just paid their taxes and drank their tea like good little colonists.  And what was with those Northerners?  They should have minded their own business and ignored slavery and the dissolution of the Union - it wasn’t any of their concern.

And when Nazis want to march up and down the streets where you live, shouting hate and violence ten feet from your home, and the courts, the police, and the mayor won’t do anything about it?  Shut up, sit down, and take it.

I don’t like the violence.  But the Nazis succeeded.  Instead of condemning the people who rioted, I want to find out why the Nazis succeeded in getting them to riot.  Why, in 2005, decades after the Civil Rights Act and Martin Luther King and WW2, the Nazis can still get people so riled up.

Police Chief Mike Navarre dismissed complaints by the group and called them liars. He said the neo-Nazi group had agreed to hold its rally inside the police perimeter, but instead began congregating just yards from where protesters and neighborhood residents gathered.

The Nazis may not have rioted, but they sure went to lengths to try and incite it.

Their goal was to intentionally cause a breach of peace.  That is not legal and if the intent is to cause public disruptions, the city would have a legal basis to stop them from walking down the sidewalks.

Just like you can’t yell “Fire!” in a theater, you can’t yell “Mein Fuhrer” in Toledo.

And Rob, check your facts: the Nazis did not have permits:

Chief Navarre said the group will have to apply for a parade permit if it wants to close a street. He said the marchers may not walk down the street and obstruct the free passage of pedestrians or vehicles, but they may walk on the sidewalk.

Mr. White said the movement is not asking for special accommodations - including police protection - or to close down streets. If city officials try to ban the march, he said the group will take them to court.

Rob:

I’m not one to defend Nazis, but lets lay blame upon those to whom it is due.

But you are defending them.

The blame should be laid upon the Nazis.  They came from all over the country to do one thing: inciting people to violence, people frustrated and angry with police and politics they saw as welcoming the Nazis.  Them’s fighting words.

Ryan G missing the point once again.  To look at things logically, you have to remove your emotions about the subject.  Your 2 examples have nothing to do with what went on over the weekend in Toledo.  The simple answer to the Nazis is to either turn your back on them while they walk by or confront them with a demonstration of your own.

The idiots that rioted never even saw a Nazi.

No Ryan. Rob is simply defending their right to assemble.

And I’m sorry, but I don’t buy your argument that a bunch of ignorant Nazi’s marching illegally in a city gives anyone the right to riot.

To suggest there’s any justification for the riots in Toledo is downright idiotic.

Ryan, you MIGHT have a point… if the violence that occured was agianst the Nazi group.  But that is not the case. They left.  They high-tailed it because they knew their lives were in danger if they proceeded. After they left, the gang-bangers TORE APART THEIR OWN TOWN.  They were rioting for rioting’s sake.  There is no excuse.  I don’t care if the Nazi group HAD started it, there would STILL be no excuse for what happened.

This is an example of a mob using any excuse to act like criminals.  Don’t try to pin the blame on anyone except the criminals themselves…

Does anyone believe that the liberals posting here would be defending conservatives and blaming the Nazis if we started beating on them for what their Brothers in Socialism, the Nazis did? And before any of you junior socialists start whining just remember every time you advocate socialism you link yourselves to to the Nazi party. If you are a liberal you advocate socialism, see how that works?

The damn ABC story isn’t even internally consistent, never mind that it clashes with every other report of the incident, and the news footage that we’ve all seen with our own eyes.

Contrast this:

Mayor of Toledo, Ohio, Declares Emergency, Sets Curfew After Hundreds of White Supremacists Riot

[...]

Mayor Jack Ford said when he and a local minister tried to calm the rioters Saturday, they were cursed and a masked gang member threatened to shoot him. At one point, the crowd reached 600 people, officials said.

With this:

At least two dozen members of the National Socialist Movement, which calls itself “America’s Nazi Party,” had gathered at a city park to march under police protection.

Both from the same article.  Yeah, you could be a smartass and say that 600 is “at least two dozen,” but you know that’s not what they meant.

The headline could be fixed by adding one word: “Spark"… but the teaser line is unfixable… it claims something that is unambiguously false.

Make no mistake… there are no “good guys” here.  Nazis, by definition, are evil hateful people.  But that doesn’t mean you can blame them for something they didn’t do just because it’s politically incorrect to blame black gangs for anything.  And it’s not ABC’s job to assign blame… they’re supposed to report the facts.  They’ve obviously failed, because their story doesn’t hold up when examined against itself.

I’ll remember Ryan’s logic of lunacy should A.N.S.W.E.R ever stage a rally in my hometown advocating the overthrow of the government with their brand of socialism.

Not to mention that unlike the Boston Tea Party, the Nazis who marched in Toledo didn’t possess one iota of authority over the residents of the town.

Apples and oranges, Ryan.
