A Word On Comments

I've often said that the only I started writing Say Anything was to try and reach people as interested in politics as I am. My fiance, friends and family are all, for the most part, pretty a-political. They just don't get the kick out of talking and debating that I do. This blog was, and is, my outlet for my politics, and comments are a big part of that. Without the comments this blog wouldn't be half as fun as it is.

In the past I have prided myself on responding to everyone who cared to post a comment in response to one of my posts. I had the blog set up to send me email notifications every time somebody posted a comment so that when I had time I could always catch up on a discussion and respond to the things being said. Unfortunately, over the last few months, these comment notifications have just become too much. There are anywhere between 300 - 500 new comments posted on this blog every single day and I just can't keep up anymore. The notifications overflow my inbox and I end up just not reading most of them.

So, for the sake of keeping my sanity, I've turned off comment notifications for me. I'd note that this is a notification system on my end. The subscribe to comments feature will continue to work as normal.

I still hope to remain involved in discussions here, but this means that if somebody responds to a post by addressing me directly I may or may not catch it and if someone comes along later and replies to a comment I've made in a discussion I may not catch that either. In fact, there's probably plenty of responses directed at me that I've missed in the past. If I did, I'm sorry, but I just don't always have time any more to reply to everybody, write the posts and monitor the comments for spam and accidentally blocked comments.

I don't want anyone to get the idea that I'm avoiding them, so if you've posted something in a comment that you think I should see feel free to shoot me an email and I'll check it out.

Anyway, that's it. Probably you all don't care, but I thought I'd post an explanation just the same.

I know what you mean about havng a-political friends & family.  If I start talking politics w/ my friend, I get the same blank stare from them that they get from me when they start talking about the foozeball (or any other sport).

Wouldn’t it just be more fun if I claimed everytime you didn’t answer one of my arguments, that you were just beaten and hiding?

just kidding.

Rob, I feel your pain, babe! When I switched servers last month I had to clear my email files. I had 7,915 comment thread emails in my delete file. I had hung on to them as reference. That was just from 13 months! I shudder to think of the number from EVERY SINGLE POST!!!!! We are a rather verbose lot, at best. What throws me is when I comment at blogs that don’t have email notification. I go to so many I forget to check back in(sorry Chief, I swear I’ll drop in and catch up tonight)(oh, Darling Girl, yours too, forgiveness please, kiss feet!) and lose out on a lot of good threads. And troll bashing! As for talking politics in house, our disputes are more along the lines of how things should be done, not what. I do love talking with youngers, especially troops. So many of them have just never thought about it,you can get real, substantive disscusions going that actually lead somewhere. I keep directing them to blogs and they read but don’t comment. Most are still figuring it all out. At 20-22 years of age. That is sad. Debate, even loud, uncivil, debate is vital to our representative republic. And it is not happening nearly enough.

This struck me as funny...not relevant to Rob’s email problem but a good example of words painting the picture.

So now we can plot to overthrow Rob  in the comment section and he’ll never catch on?

At the very least we can talk about him behind his back.

Hey!  I just said I wasn’t getting comment notifications any more, not that I am going to stop paying attention!

Sheesh.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

Rob - I have no idea how it works, but over at JeepForum.com they have comment-notification as well.  The difference is that you only get the first notificaiton, until you check back to the blog.

There may be one or ten followup comments, but I only get one email.  And that resests whatever counter they have in their forum-software and I get another notification…

Does your software (or your coding skills) have such a device?  Might solve your (and our) problem.
