A Reenlistment Seen ‘Round The World

Loyalty, honor and determination defined:

SAN DIEGO — Marine Cpl. Gareth Hawkins extended his enlistment to go on a third deployment to Iraq so his battalion would not be left in the hands of rookies.

Twenty days after he arrived in Iraq for the third time, a roadside bomb exploded beneath his 7-ton truck, leaving Hawkins dazed and his heel shattered.

Minutes later, his pain held at bay by morphine, the 23-year-old asked to complete one piece of unfinished business before being rushed via ambulance to undergo surgery at the hospital at the Marine air base in Taqaddum.

He wanted to reenlist for another four-year hitch.

A photographer was nearby and took a picture of the ad hoc ceremony: Hawkins on a stretcher with his right hand in the air as officers administered the reenlistment oath.

Meanwhile, in Washington DC:

Is impugning this guy’s honor really the best you can come up with, Poodle?

I was questioning the wisdom of administering the oath while the guy was opiated .

The real story is between the lines.

Hawkins is getting a $41,000 bonus that will be tax-exempt because he reenlisted in a war zone.

His commander did the right thing in
expediting Cpl. Hawkins re-up.

What a turd. This Marine deserves the utmost respect, and Poodle can only poke fun at it.

I worked and trained with many Marines during my time in the service, and they’re the best of the best. It’s of no surprise that Cpl Hawkins would chose to do this. It’s a matter of pride. Seeing somebody do something like this throws all of the democratic bullcrap right back in their faces. It’s called resolve… Something that our government needs to re-learn apparently.

arclightzero on July 30, 2007 at 07:07 am

So you think it’s a money thing? You have got to be kidding me… Have you ever met a Marine?

arclightzero on July 30, 2007 at 07:08 am

poodle,

You are a despicable sack of excrement unfit to wash the feet of the Marine who re-upped in the piece above.

Cpl Hawkins did the right thing , his commander did the right thing.
Money was involved and Hawkins should
get all he deserves. His commander saw to it.

If you don’t understand that this could have gone the other way,
i.e. something like,
“CinqPac R108b.1 will not allow re-enlistment
till the extent of injuries and ability to serve are determined.”
Then you don’t know the military.

As I said , his commander did the right thing.

The concept of honor and dedicatio are totally lost on woofie.  Consdering what he posts, I seriously doubt he would sacrifice his self interests and wellbeing for his fellow man.  Woofie, I would not ever let you cover my back!!!

You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.

Is this another Tillman and or corporal Lynch?
Nice photo op to make people like you feel nice.
How can anyone be sure that the tax free $43000 didn’t play a role? You all are so quick to dismiss it.The tax free $43000 does play a big role, whether you guys like it or not. That is precisly why it is offered.

ellinas on July 30, 2007 at 08:11 am

we can make all sorts of assumptions, but the fact of the matter is that every Marine I have known would have done it out of honor and resolve with the money thing taking a very distant back seat. That should be evidenced by the fact that this guy extended his enlistment to go back a third time, knowing damn well that he could be hurt or killed.

arclightzero on July 30, 2007 at 08:43 am

poodle now opines:

Cpl Hawkins did the right thing , his commander did the right thing.  Money was involved and Hawkins should get all he deserves. His commander saw to it.

Whereas before he insinuated that the officer swearing in the Corporal was either denying him medication until he did so or taking advantage of someone drugged to the gills:

That must really hurt Cpl.

Want some morphine?

Raise your right hand and repeat after me, I.....

You’re still a sack of excrement unfit to wash Hawkins feet, poodle.

If you don’t understand that this could have gone the other way, i.e. something like, “CinqPac R108b.1 will not allow re-enlistment till the extent of injuries and ability to serve are determined.”

The moving pen goes back to re-write.  Won’t wash you pimple on the pustule on the boil on a real Marine’s fourth point of contact.

Then you don’t know the military.

Tell us poodle, what is your deep (as a petri dish) and broad (as a test tube) understanding of the military based upon?  Discovery Channel?

As I said , his commander did the right thing.

His commander did.  You, on the other hand, have not.  Nor shall any of us who know you be holding our breaths waiting for you to do the right thing.  It would go against your lack of character.

Well dang Woof, I have to admit, you do have a point. They probably should have avoided making it sound like he received a mind altering drug just prior to reenlisting. Which might I add, things like this is what gets all the Cindy Sheehans to get their panties riding up where “dem sho’oughtna be”

On to the point of the article..
How can you not love these guys!! We have the best in the world and they deserve everyones respect.. Thanks Marine Cpl. Gareth Hawkins and all the others

When I first commented I had read only Rob’s excerpt of the story.
Later I read all the cited article and it was clear to me what actually happened.
I was a soldier, I lived and served with Marines, (most of whom had been wounded 3X), they were not quite so gung-ho.
They were kids , so was I.

poodle,

If your write truly (a rather large “if”, that), then you have fallen to the depths of Murtha et al.

We’re still waiting for you to do the right thing, as we no doubt will still be at the final trumpet call.
