A Cruise Missile Over Utah?

That appears to be the only explanation for this image caught on Google Maps:

image

Weird, no?

Call me naive, but what would a cruise missile be doing in the sky over Utah?  Especially so close to a town.  Just to the south east is Circleville, home of Butch Cassidy, and U.S. Highway 89.

I know we test missiles, but flying them over populated areas?

I didn’t think that was happening.

Comments

Don’t think Utah is considered populated.

I remember when they wanted to test some missiles from Eglin AFB, Pensacola Fl into Alabama. Don’t know if they did.

Well, since I live in “fly-over” country, I have a different perspective on that.

If you are going to fly missiles around Utah seems a good place in the US to do it. Lots of desert.

Can’t be a cruise missle… compare that picture to a view of my house at the same ‘zoom’ level.  A cruise missle wouldn’t be much bigger than one of the cars in my driveway, that think appears to be well over 100 ft (granted it could be a mile or two off the ground and closer to the satellite, but satellites orbit over a 100 miles above the ground, right? so the perspective wouldn’t be that different..) That think looks closer to the size of a passenger jet (that’s like an MD-80 or so)

If it’s a cruise missle, it’s one hella big cruise missle…

There’s no way that’s a jet.  Where are the wings?

I said cruise missile, but I’m not an expert on that sort of thing.  Maybe it’s another type of missile, but it still looks like a missile to me.

Maybe it’s banking a very, very hard turn and so the wings are pointing straight up and down.... wink I’m not claiming to be an expert either, just pointing out it appears to be very, very large.  I don’t know of any missiles that large other than ICBMs or something (although I think those are even bigger than the thing appears to be in the picture.)

I think it’s an UFO on the way to help us solve global whining.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

You know, if you look closely, right where the white bumps are a little past midway down, there do appear to be wings.  They are dark and blend in, but there is a definite swept back shape going out from both of those bumps.  I think that’s a plane who’s wings are just painting grey or black so they blend into the ground.  Take a close look.

Sphagnum on March 3, 2007 at 03:46 pm

Taking a second look, you can even see tailwings coming out of the back, also dark color and blend in.  It’s definently a plane, it’s got wings, they are just very hard to see…

The picture also shows up on Google Earth.  (Cut and paste the coordinates).

The length on the measuring tool shows 81 feet but I don’t know how accurate that is.  Certainly if it’s above the ground that’d be overstated.

Also you can follow the contrail a long way back.

Nancy Pelosi’s new stealth plane.

The contrails are actually spillage from the twin hot tubs.

That is a jet, 727 would be my guess. Spaghetti stole my thunder, you can make out the lines of wings. Were it a cruise missle there would be a single vaptrail and no descernible wings.

I agree with Sphagnum and 2Hotel9.  Even if you don’t agree about the wings, the physics is wrong for it to be a cruise missle—you don’t get contrails for a low-flying craft.  Also, as 2Hotel9 pointed out, double contrails indicate two engines on the sides.  The size is also way to be to be a cruise missle.

I had a great view of the eclipse while driving south through the central hills of Alabama (between Centerville and Montgomery).  Wish I had a bit better camera—I would have stopped and taken a few shots.

Carrick on March 3, 2007 at 10:44 pm

We only got to see a limb across the rising edge as the moon was a few degrees above the horizon. Clouds moved in from the S-SW and obscured it early. And damn Carrick, you are in the heart of Dixie! Did y’all get any of that crap that went through Thursday and Friday?

2Hotel9, we didn’t fair too badly this time, though my wife’s green houses all lost their plastic-sheet roofs (well, I suppose it saved me having to take them down for her, since it’s almost “spring” here).

You guys sure cleared this mystery up.

Do you folks have any idea how hard it is to write these posts knowing that my commenters are smarter than I am?

Have you ever looked at how much of Utah is government land?  That’s where Area 51 was rumored to have moved to once the cover was blown, according to the tinfoil hat crowd.  If I wanted to test a cruise missile or reverse-engineer a UFO, that’d be a decent place to try.

Clint F on March 4, 2007 at 03:49 pm

Clint, long time no, well, you know. And you are correct, I didn’t mean to give the impression that Utah’s skys were empty, by no means. There is all kinda strange and unusual machines buzzing around Utah,Nevada,Arizona, and New Mexico. Hell, that aircraft could very well be USG/M. Or from any of the several skunkworks shops in the region. I’ll follow the googlearth link and see what comes up.

That bird is south and slightly east of Salt Lake, I will call it as a local commuter flight, $5 on it being a Southwest daily out of Pheonix or Flagstaff.

Yep, on second glance, the wings are easily visible.

No body gonna take me up on that fin? We can narrow it down, figure time of day and back track. If we could follow the contrail back farther it would help, it vanishes in the next frameset south. Rob could use the money.
