9 Out Of 10 Of 2008’s Worst Cars Were Made By US Automakers

Here’s the list:

10. Chevy TrailBlazer / GMC Envoy / Isuzu Ascender / Saab 9-7X
9. VW Routan
8. HUMMER H2
7. HUMMER H3/H3T
6. Dodge Nitro
5. Dodge Caliber
4. Chrysler Aspen / Dodge Durango
3. Chevrolet Aveo
2. Jeep Compass
1. Chrysler Sebring / Dodge Avenger

For the record, all nine of those cars are in production for the 2009 model year.

Feeling good about that bailout yet?

How very strange. Two of the cars on the list, the Hummers, are also two in the top ten of the most popular and most likely to be stolen.

We own a Dodge Ram and a Pontiac minivan. I’ve never been more impressed with a vehicle than I am with that pickup—10 years and runs like a top.

The Pontiac has convinced me that I will never buy another GM product in my lifetime…

It’s funny—The best car my wife ever owned was a Honda Accord, which she lost when she was rear-ended by—A Hummer…The Accord’s replacement was the minivan we’ve nicknamed ‘Hitler’...

NoJelly on December 21, 2008 at 04:54 am

As I already said, I am buying nothing from them. Anyone remember the Yugo? That is where the American car industry is now headed. And I ain’t buying.

It looks to me like this list is the result of an un-popularity contest more or less.

I agree with ptschett….

So, My first thoughts are:
Which sandal-wearing, burlap-shirted, pothead, hippies were polled in this survey?

Where was the survey orchestrated? [Peoples Republik of Kalifornia? Perhaps S.F.?]

When was it done? [$4- gas…...]

What were the determinative criteria?
- Mechanical flaw statistics?
- Safety?
- Mileage stats?
- Sales/Re-Sale figures?

I may find some esoterically disgusting…. but “bad” vehicles?

Actually, it’s ten out of ten.  The VW Routan is a re-badged Chrysler Town & Country minivan.

I truly hope that Detroit can get it’s collective act together, and focuses on producing quality products that maintain their value.  I would like to “Buy American”, but I’m not going to invest in a POS just to support a failing business model.

Well I bought a new Pontiac Minivan in 1994, NoJelly, drove it for 10 years and 150,000 miles, gave it to my daughter-in-law when her Honda lost its transmission and she is still driving it today with 235,000 miles on it. Other than regular maintenance like oil changes, etc. and replacing tires and fuses, I’ve never had one moment’s trouble with it. Still drives like a dream and is the most comfortable car to travel in that I’ve ever owned.

The only non-GM car I’ve ever owned was a Honda Accord and in 6 years I had to replace the transmission twice and then had the engine bots shear off and drop the engine on Dupont Circle in the middle of Washington, DC at rush hour. I hated that car.

My son drives a big Chevy extended cab p.u. that he bought in ‘99 and he says he’ll drive it ‘til it falls apart under him. Again, his favorite vehicle he’s owned and he has been buying or revamping vehicles for the last 22 years.

I am on my 2nd Escallade, and my hubby has the big Hummer, and we have been very lucky with all three. I do know that the Sebring and the Avenger have been on other lists I’ve seen, as not doing well. I had several Chryslers over the years, and in the old days they were pretty good.

Ken, my foreign car(truck) provides a very reliable source of income by getting me to and from jobs, stores, hunting etc etc. And the best part? My 4Runner was built in America by nonUnion, 100% Right To Work Americans, with just a smattering of illegal immigrants to do the crap work.

Hotel, the comment is response to the comment

i am staunchly anti union.

to let the big three die will be like shooting the lame horse (USA) in the head.
aside from the jobs toyota provides, the profit from the sale of those cars goes back to Japan.
in my humble opinion, Americans should be buying American brand cars right now! i did.
it’s not about the cars, its about our country.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.

Great! You bought a foreign car made in America, but all the profit went to the foreign country. Isn’t that special?

Next you’ll be telling us how great it is to have foreign countries producing our military hardware too. What a putz!

Buy American!

HAHAHA!  Bingo.

Instead of finding things to attack each other over, why don’t we find areas where we can agree, and find compromise long enough to take a step back and enjoy the recognition of our similarities?

Then, we can take steps forward in a constructive way, together, to tackle the issues where we really do disagree.

This and the auto “bailout” means that my next car will not have been built by any of the “state” auto makers…

The “FairVote”, a voting system that gives each voter a vote for every dollar they contribute in taxes, is the ultimate in taxation with representation.  Bring this up in roomful of lefties and you’ll see just how tolerant they really are.

Again, for the slow people, Chapter 11 is not “Letting The Big 3 Go Under”, save the drama for Pelosi, Rangel and Pinky.

Next, point us to all the pieces of American Military hardware manufactured overseas.

And for the 4Runner, you really believe all the “profits” of the bug3 go to America? Are you really trying to tell us that all those Americans did not get paid, their health plans paid into, retirements matched? Really?

this is definatly a lose-lose situation. it sucks! bailing them out smacks of socialism. but we can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

the current “bailout” is a loan. a 5% loan if i’m not mistaken. “we” stand to make money on the deal. or not. but we cant just look the other way. the big 3, like it or not, has been very good to the USA.

KEN on December 21, 2008 at 07:29 pm

Chapter 11 is not shutting down a company. Not even close.

Chapter 11 leaves hundreds of vendors and suppliers and thousands of employees out in the cold.

i really dont think the average person knows just how deep this issue goes.

loaning these guys the money is a better alternative.

again…

the big 3, like it or not, has been very good to the USA.

Well, I gotta honestly say that I’m happy for you. There is no doubt in my mind that all manufacturers produce lemons and cherries to varying degrees. I’m a “one strike” kinda guy though…I won’t spend that kind of money twice when the vehicle turns out to be the money pit this one has…

The only non-GM car I’ve ever owned was a Honda Accord and in 6 years I had to replace the transmission twice and then had the engine bots shear off and drop the engine on Dupont Circle in the middle of Washington, DC at rush hour. I hated that car.

Sounds quite a bit like a Pontiac Montana that resides in my garage…I’d replace it yesterday if it weren’t paid for…

That’s what I’m experiencing with the Dodge Ram. New in ‘98, one warranty issue in all that time, has never failed to start on the first turn of the key. That truck will rust away around me…

KEN, are you sure you don’t mean Chapter 7?  Otherwise, I’m having a hard time understanding your statement.  If you do mean Chapter 11, could you expand a little more?
