2006 MLB Playoff Update

Day 1 of the 2006 MLB Playoffs has come and gone.  Here is a game by game recap:

Oakland A’s - 3, Minnesota Twinderellas - 2

Frank Thomas and Barry Zito led the way in their 3-2 victory over Johan Santana and the Twinkies.  Many experts believed that the Twins had the overall advantage because they had home field advantage and two victories from Johan Santana.  That went right down the tube yesterday afternoon.  Zito outdeuled the Cy Young winner Santana.  Oh yeah… and that old, broken-down Frank Thomas hit 2 HRs.

St. Louis Cardinals - 5, San Diego Padres - 1

The Cardinals limped into the playoffs, but roughed up Padre Ace Jake Peavy.  Peavy looked great until Albert Pujols slugged a bomb that sent the Peavy-train off the tracks.  Cris Carpenter shut down the weak Padre offense.

Detroit Kitten - 4, New York Buttheads - 8

MVP favorite Derek Jeter led the Yankees with a 5-5 night to beat the Kittens, 8-4..  Neither team pitched well, and the Yankees capitalized on a couple of bad pitches by the Kitten staff.

One lucky win and you’re talking trash.  The A’s will get shelled today.

The Twins need to be more patient at the plate (they let Zito pitch 8 innings, on only 92 pitches, despite a nearly 50-50 ball-strike split; they need to get to the Oakland bullpen) and more cautious on the basepaths (Castillo should never steal any bases). Gardenhire needs to get less retarded (Punto’s stupid sacrifice bunt in the 4th; Castillo NOT sacrificing down 1 in the 8th; not bringing in Nathan to pitch to Thomas in the 9th).

The Twins are the better team, and if they got to play the A’s over an entire season, they’d win (Oakland’s best offensive skill is their ability to draw walks; Minnesota’s pitchers, however, allowed the fewest walks in the league--big advantage to Minnesota). But in a 5-game series, anything can happen. This is why the Major League Baseball playoffs are stupid--we might as well flip a coin to determine who wins in the first round of the playoffs.

A good way to think about it: The average first-place team in baseball wins about 4 out of every 7 games it plays (a .571 winning percentage, or about 93 games in a full season). The average last place team wins about 3 out of every 7 games (a .429 winning percentage, or 69 wins in a full season). In other words, it would take 7 games for you to tell the difference between a 1st place team and a last place team… and yet in the first-round of the playoffs, where you have to tell the difference between TWO GREAT TEAMS, they play a best-of-five! That’s insane!

Do you like baseball??  Or do you just not like the Yankees, Detroit, and the Twins?  I think Derek Jeter is one of the all time greats.

I’m a twins fan.

I am a HUGE A’s fan!

You’re right.  The playoffs are a crapshoot.  There’s no doubt about it.

I like the way the A’s play baseball (their batters draw lots of walks, they don’t steal or sacrifice much--they play the percentages), but I’m from North Dakota, so I need to root for the Twins. Though that does mean I need to criticize almost every decision Gardenhire makes, because he’s retarded.

I was born and raised in ND and live in Fargo… and I’ve ALWAYS been a HUGE A’s fan.

Even when they were shitty (mid-90s) I still hated them.  Then this whole “Moneyball” deal got going and I was like “I’m so glad it’s my team doing this.”

It’s been awesome.

I still LIKED them… by the way.

The Twins have certainly attained clarity.  Lose any more games this week and their down with the season.

The A’s don’t have that luxery.  They could win.  They could lose.  There’s still games to play.

I pity them really.

Ewww.... not looking so good for he Twinkies right now. When you’re pinning your whole season on Radke and Silva, you know something’s wrong.

Dave, I’m an optimist, what can I say?

That is why the post season is so cool.

Jeez, we were so close.  If we just had scored more runs than Oakland I’m sure we would have won.

Please continue these updates.  I don’t have cable at home and can only watch the games they show on the Networks.

How the ‘f’ are the Twins supposed to win without your support.  There you are at work when there’s baseball to watch.

We need you man!
