Earl Pomeroy Votes Against the Secure Borders Act

Today, the House voted on the Secure Borders Act of 2006.
The House voted for the second time in a year to erect a fence along a third of the U.S.-Mexican border, part of a Republican effort to keep illegal immigration an issue before voters. A new 700 miles of double-layered fencing won approval on a 283-138 vote, a bigger margin than last December when the House passed it as part of a broader bill that also would have made being an illegal immigrant a felony. The nearly 2,000-mile border now has about 75 miles of fencing. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said the separate fence bill was needed to show Americans "we can take meaningful action to secure the border."
North Dakota Representative Earl Pomeroy voted against securing our border. In fact, he obviously does not care enough about immigration to even put it on his reelection campaign web site. We know that Earl Pomeroy does not want to secure our border and his opponent, Matt Mechtel (R) does. Matt has taken a real hardline stance against illegal immigration. Mechtel should be able to make a campaign issue out of this. Expect to hear from the Mechtel campaign about this vote real soon.

I can’t figure out why the House is doing this.  Do they think they can actually get the Senate to go along with this, or are they just posturing for the November elections?

Mostly posturing, I think.

Carrick on September 14, 2006 at 01:32 pm

Or.............  maybe they’re trying to do what’s right.

The Senate is passed the stage of ever getting anything done. They’ll just bicker back and forth about the War until the elections are over.

The House is doing what’s right for America.  The Republicans are, anyway.

They already did what was right, back in what, June?
Unless something has changed in the Senate the House’s time would be better spent working on something that has a chance of becoming law.

I understand what you’re saying.  It’s just refreshing to see them do something that Americans actually want.

That’s a dumber way of operating than to score political points.

The House should promote what it wants whether the Senate agrees or not.

This is the bill they should have passed last year ..

Last year Pomeroy voted to allow states to issue ID’s to illegal immigrants.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

That’s a popular thing for the Democratic controlled legislature out here in CA to do as well. Fortunately, Ahhhnold ‘terminated’ them.

Greg:  There’s no political advantage in North Dakota to facilitate illegal immigration.

The only conclusion one can come to is that he’s listening to the National Democrat party and ignoring his constituents.

Go ask the illegals harvesting sugarbeets.

we don’t need a fence… we need a big, depressing wall.

Go ask the illegals harvesting sugarbeets.

Free you don’t know crap.

1.  You don’t harvest with migrant workers.  You harvest with big equipment and big trucks.

2.  There are very few migrants HOEING sugar beets any more.  Many farmers are farming with Roundup ready Sugar Beets.

All of the migrants that work for my dad, hoeing sugar beets and, yes, helping with the harvest are 100% LEGAL.

brenarlo on September 14, 2006 at 04:07 pm

Brenarlo, in the old pre-roundup ready days you sued to see a ton of migrants around for hoeing season.  A few stuck around for harvest.

There aren’t nearly the hoe-ers around anymore.  I don’t see a ton of migrants driving trucks, but undoubtedly there are some.
