Frist: Border Security Only Immigration Issue To Be Addressed Before Elections

Hmm...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. congressional leaders are giving up on broad immigration legislation that would legalize millions of illegal immigrants and instead will concentrate on border security ahead of the elections, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said on Wednesday.

"I think it would be next to impossible to pass a comprehensive bill that includes dealing with the diversity of 12 million people here in the next three weeks," the Tennessee Republican told reporters.

Part of me wants to think of this as a good thing. After all, no guest worker program or amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the country is a good thing for those of us in favor of enforcing our immigration laws right? And Frist says Congress will still address a permanent solution for border security, to there will be progress regardless.

But another part of me thinks that the Republicans are probably just putting off the guest worker/amnesty thing until after the elections when they can safely pass it without having to worry about being held accountable for it in an election right afterward.

Rob: This is exactly the right way to proceed.  Without border security, none of the rest of it can be expected to work at all.  If the illegals can still come streaming in, how can a guest worker program be administered?  It will simply be an amnesty program, no matter what it’s called.  Frist and the congressional republicans got this one right.  It’s also going to stop the escalation of the taxpayers, especially in the border states, getting fleeced by the costs associated with the illegals.  Next step: deportation.

LOL

The best way to now go about it is probably some sort-of certification where by a comprehensive bill requires the border to be secured and then granting amnesty to those undocument already here.

on this same issue, ..

I was watching the other day a probram documenting the attacks on the US mainland by Germany and Japan during WWII. They show a clip of a massive NAVY program that used ~thousands of Navy soldier each with a trained dog looking after our Coast line.

Said program gave me the following idea:

Federal grants for an ambtious programs to train dogs and border personell for a similar program.  The grant would go to Universities in the border regions which would use it to develop and implement said ambitious and stratgic program.

A goal could go along the following line:  two dogs trained for every new border patrol hired within the next five years.

It is cost effective A given their nose should be more effective at finding undocumented and drug runner illigally crossing or border than human, plus can work longer hours and cost less to mantain (no pension, lower health cost etc.)

its a bold idea to contemplate..

A special fee in the citizenship requirement or other immigration service can be used to offset the cost.

You don’t need a dog to sniff down an illegal.  You need eyes (or sensors) to see them move and people to pick them up.

It really is that simple.

What the.... isn’t this EXACTLY what the “Security First” push was all about?  Why are you skeptical when Frist is doing exactly what you were pushing for?
