Bryant Gumble Is An Arse

Bryant Gumble, talking about the Olympics on his HBO show Real Sports:

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t care about them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

Do I sense a hint of racial supremacism here?

As for the lack of blacks at a GOP convention, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Alberto Gonzales and the four other minority members of President Bush's cabinet are going to be surprised as hell.

Well, the good news is that the Olympics are so white that it keeps the athletes from jumping into the stands like it is a Detroit Pistons game.

What a prick.  What makes Basketball any more of a sport than skiing or snowboarding?  Ah, that black people play it.  Almost missed that.

Perhaps if all the white folks that subsidize the NBA and College basketball decided to stop watching sports that blacks participate in…

"There are lots of blacks in the GOP!"

It’s just a fantasy, whoa-whoa

It’s not the real thing, whoa-whoa

But sometimes a fantasy

There aren’t many blacks at the Dem convention either.  But it is a bit of a problem.  It shows that the black population is either not as politically motivated; that their being purposely excluded; or that they are not openly embracing political thought.

I wonder if he will say later, during the summer games something to the effect:  despite a paucity of blacks whites that makes the Winter Summer Games look like a GOP Democratic convention.  What is the matter with him?  He must have gone to the "kool aid" bucket one too many times.  If he does not, then he basically admits to his bias, which he has now make known.

First B.G. is the whitest black man in sports braodcasting, and it is finally costing him some work, so he is trying to street up his image. I am soon that he will be finnin to do sumpin freaky to get his name out there again.

Second, even those that watch the winter games are expressing extreme dissatifaction the the coverage, frankly it sux worse than watching butter melt in Phoenix in the summer time.

Last cracks me up that he would throw the lack of black athletes out there. The one black speed skater basically did a T.O. on the whole Olympic team yesterday by refusing to participate in the team events becaus eit may take away from his individual events.

What a cock bag.  My housemates and I have been hopelessly addicted to the winter olympics the past week.  It’s not as good as the summer ones, but there are definately some amazing athletes competing.

Sorry, Chief, but to the liberal elites, such as Bryant Gumble, what you and I regard as bias and bigotry, they regards as an integral part of their intellectual superiority.  It’s a package deal, that goes with the ever-so-patient condescension, the seven-figure contract, and the co-op overlooking Central Park.

Jeremy Bloom is one of the best stories in sports.  (OK, I am biased and have a freaking site called ski-blog.com)  Shaun White, Danny Kass, Lindsey Kildow, and others are awesome stories.  Apollo, etc., these games have great athletes that are interesting and different.  These are Gen-Y athletes participating in the things that we enjoy.

BTW, Bryant Gumbel is not black.  It is funny to see black folks that try to be liberal elitists try to maintain their street cred.  So an educated elitist says something like I like basketball better because it has more black people?  Bryant is conflicted.  He needs to decide who he is.  Educated white folks are not allowed to be bigots like that.

What’s really amazing is that Rush Limbaugh lost his job in a furor over his comment that Donovan McNabb was not that good and got a "pass" (so to speak) from the media because he was an african american QB. Limbaugh continued saying that a lot of people really wanted to see a black QB succeed since the position was overwhelmingly white. Limbaugh’s comments were not racist in any way, just wrong. (McNabb proved him wrong)

Gumble’s comments are purley racist and meant to be so. But as of yet, no one is calling for his resignation. It’s very disturbing that people on the left will actually get the "pass" on their obvious prejudices.

Eno Mcnabb actually proved him correct, he isn’t that good as an individual athlete nor was he the first white man to be fired for statements of that nature, Jimmy the Greek was the first along time before that which brings me the long way around to my point.

For years now our sports world has been trying to prove that there is truly equality among the races, they push for african american coaches, officials, and ececutives, yet do not push for more other than black players. Bryant is just another tool of this most brothers consider him an UNCLE TOM and most whites consider him a brother trying to PASS, this is his attempt to get back in with the colored folk plain and simple, that is what happens when you start to lose work for the same reason that you got work.

As far as the rest goes it still shocks and amazes me to this day that only whites are racist and even when blacks make racist staements it is not racism because of their race........I know it made me dizzy just typing it.

On a lighter note, in the two hour finale of the best show on TV last week, Franklin was wearing a shirt that said "George Bush hates black puppets."  Kanye West can spew his BS and gets a pass too.  TO, McNabb, the head of the NAACP...  seems the only people that can even mention black people without being called racists are black people.

We all need to just reflect for a little bit on the fact that 150 years ago some other people that happen to be white owned slaves.  In light of this fact, we are no longer allowed to say anything about what a dirtbag Bryant Gumble is and how he made racist statements because by virtue of the fact we are white, ultimately we are tainted by slavery.

You don’t see many blacks in the Olympic swimming competition either.  What about diving or water polo?  How about the shooting competitions?  Pole vault?

Eno, perhaps if more people were actually paying attention to Gumble, then more people would be angered by his obvious bigotry.  But the fact of the matter is that as a commentator, Bryant Gumble is about as pertinent, and interesting, as used dishwater.

Thats funny all of the people that flunked the swimming test in my company in boot camp were black I have had people tell me how trerrible it is that I would say that my response what should I say the swimming challenged individuals were darker than I. Shooting competitions still chuckling over that one.

Richard,  Identifying facts can lead to solutions.  You were correct.  I saw a bit of this in the late 60’s.  There were an inordinate number of negroes who were paranoid or hydrophobic let’s say about water.  I taught a 26 year old man who confessed his fear of the water in general and "over his head" water in particular.  I taught him, using Red Cross methods to swim from scratch to swimming over his head in about five days.  First you have to establish a Trust with your student(s).  Trust is everything.  Attitude is everything.  Good post.  What branch?

I saw somebody use it on another blog and it made me chuckle.  My mom says "arse" all the time instead of "ass," so I thought I’d use it.

It’s worth noting that the ancient Greeks would no more recognize basketball than hockey, and that Gumbel’s knowledge of the Olympics is indicated by the fact that he doesn’t cite track and field--real athletics--as a real sport which blacks do dominate, as well as the traditional and ancient Olympic sports of boxing and wrestling.

In other words, he’s having a wee bit of trouble with the concept.

Chief almost all that failed the first test passed after some seals took over but we still had 6 that were ELS’d because even after the effort they still could not swim and all were black, a buddy of mine here at work had the exact same report from his navy boot in the same pool I had been in several years earlier.

Navy bootcamp story--mine is the same.  All the black dudes that could not swim were either from the inner city or deep south.  And trust me, we gave them sh*t about it too.

Stereotypes are only funny if there is some underlying truth to them.  And blacks and water would not be funny if people did not observe similar things.

I would like to add to the Basic Training stories, sorry, in the Army they just did not accept failure. They put your ass through it till you passed. At least in ‘79 they did, can’t say as to how it be now.  My favorite story is the Squarehead going through UDT course, took his 2 buckets of rock, jumped in the pool and walked them to the other end without coming up for air. Instructor met him at that end and screamed"Why didn’t you come up for air!" He said" I can’t swim." Inst. laughed and said"Godamn boy, we can teach you how to swim!". Needless to say he became a SEAL. Sad to say he died, May 1967 in the Rong Sat, South Vietnam. The luck ran out.

Not understanding that track and field is the only real athletics is not a sign of low IQ, but rather a sign of ignorance of history.  Bryant Gumbel is, sadly, not the only person with this ailment.

Actually, the only event in the original Olympic Games was the 200-meter dash.  By Bryant’s standards, then, that is the only event we should have in the modern Olympic Games.

That’s true, but what I was really getting at was that historically, the word "athletics" refers only to the events we now call track & field.  Sport, on the other hand, refers traditionally to what we’d today call hunting, fishing, and combat sports like boxing and wrestling.

In short, most of those today called "athletes" or "sportsmen" are really just playing games.  :^)

BTW, I am calling for his resignation!  I have written letters to HBO and the US Figure Skating Organization.  The fact that he is a sports commentator with his own show makes his comments even more repulsive.  Aside from being a racist he is a hypocrite as well...his wife is white.  Wonder what Shauni Davis and his mom would have to say to him?

If this comment had been made by a white person, he would have been fired already.  There’s a double standard that Afro-Americans can be racist, but only they are allowed to be racist.  Fire him like they did Limbaugh.  He deserves it.  What a moron!!!!

I wouldn’t call for his termination.  It was more of a political comment first, and second a sort of racist comment in that those he was referring to either have not decided to join the Republican party.  Now, if he is implying that the Republican party somehow has illegally discriminated, then he should ask that question or prove his assertion.

Mokoko, race is not relevent in this. The day after Gumble made this incredibly stupid statement, a black athlete won gold in speedskating. His brother is an excellent sports commentator, Bryant is a bitter, non-talented hack. That is the relevent issue. Bryant needs to find a local TV news team he can join, start over, build his credibility with the veiwing audience. Not going to happen, oh, well.
