Don, it has been Capitol policy to disallow sloganeering and protests within the Capitol building for decades now, far before Bush’s time.  Last night the policy was applied even-handedly.  People wearing offending t-shirts from both sides of the political spectrum were removed.

What part of that do you have a problem with?

If Sheehan wants to go join her protesting group out on the street, she can where what ever shirt she wants. What about courtesy, respect, and honor words that many civil disobediants have erased from their dictionaries. There are rules in certain respectful places such as the capitol floor for a reason. When you break these rules, you shouldn’t be asked to comply, you should be escorted out immediately as they did with both women. There is a time and a place to let your voice, and actions heard, the capitol floor during any Presidents speech is not one of them.

And of course we didnt hear anything on the news broadcast networks about Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young, who was also removed from the Speech for wearing a shirt that said “Support Our Troops-Defending Our Freedom.” Even though she wasn’t from the same camp as Sheehan, they wanted to be politically correct and kick both out for breaking the rules, rightfully so. My question, where was the media on that one?

This had nothing to do with dissent and everything to do with disrupting a speech.

Ever read a history of Mao’s “Cultural Revolution?” America’s a long way from the excessess of the Red Guards, but between the demonization of University professors to this sort of thing it’s starting to sound awfully familiar…

I strongly disagree with the fact that people are thrown our and arrested in the house of representatives for wearing a Tee shirt that proclaimed their constitutional rights to free speech. They did not disrupt or cause any commotion in the chamber other than state their ideas with their Tee shirt emblems. I would certainly agree to their arrest onbly if they commited any disruptions during the State of the Union address.

There is a law that does not allow you to campaign within 50 feet of a polling place.  This law includes active campaigning (chanting, cheering, etc) as well as passive campaigning (wearing a political t-shirt or pin).

There is a similar law regarding demonstrations within the capitol building.  Both active and passive demonstrations are barred.  Same kind of law.  You don’t have to like it but it is not something that can be pinned on any individual or political party.

You could almost make a case that Sheehan was innocent by reason of ignorance of this law...except that she kept her ‘protest materials’ hidden until she was in the chambers.  (By the way: Wearing a T-shirt to an event like this? Extremely tacky even without a silly slogan.)

There is one loophole to this restriction...if you get enough votes in a legislative or senatorial race, you can demonstrate ‘til the cows come home.  (And they even show it on CSPAN)

What’s amazing to me is how much attention the righties are giving her, playing right into her hands.  If she hadn’t been arrested and removed, do you think there would have been as much attention as there is now?  Here we are, again talking about how Bush won’t talk to a woman who’s son was killed in Iraq, instead of talking about his speech.  Shooting fish in a barrel.

Why can’t anyone see this for what it is.  Sotu is a formal event.

If you go to a fancy restaurant without the proper attire, you don’t get in.

If you go to SOTU improperly attired, you don’t get in. If you hide your improper attire to get past the gate and then flaunt it once inside...expect to be removed.

Wasn’t it just last year that the Republicans all painted their fingers purple for the SOTU? It’s tough to “sloganeer” more than that.

Neither of them should have been removed, but if you’re going to argue that wearing a t-shirt with writing on it in a public buiding is an arrestable offence shouldn’t they BOTH have been arrested?

sheehan knew what she was wearing was inappropiate or she wouldn’t have covered it up. she is a disgrace to her son and so are her supporters. the media need not give her a another minute.

I am a registered Democrat who until recently turned Republican. My decision to change had become so easy just watching this Democratic Party and seeing people like Cindy Sheehan make total fools of themselves and showing total disrespect for this country by their antics and especially cozying up with communist, Cindy who are going to cozy up to next, Bin Laden?

Perhaps. But it does serve a secondary purpose in the showing of who supports the degradation of civility. The pathetic excuses and moral relativism coming from the left shows me that Cindy Sheehan unwittingly plays into our hands.

There was no double standard, Hermit, one person did not respond to the requests to leave the other did in an amiable manner.

Guess which one was arrested for non-compliance and which one was not.

Not really...I did say that the fact that charges weren’t layed comes as no surprise. What is a little surprising and unusual is that the police have apologised to both ladies. The bottom line is that Sheehan went looking for publicity and she got it so I guess she wins again.

apparently there was nothing wrong with “sending in one of their clowns to do their dirty work”...........afterall “WE SCREWED UP” is an excuse this administration could use everyday for almost all of it’s policies......i mean just think of what KING GEORGE offered working people all across the country on tuesday night.......a chance to be able to “save their own money” for affordable health care...WOW whatta deal!!!!.......but not as good a deal as going to iraq with faulty equipment or coming home wounded and finding our you “have no coverage”....the solution is simple....when the poor or lower middle class have a child they should start saving immediately......so when another administration lies and sends them somewhere to die their family will have enough money saved for benefits.....UNLESS OF COURSE you crawled through a fence to get here or came hidden in the back of a truck......then you get FREE HEALTH CARE courtesy of the taxpayers of AZ,CA,NM,and TX!

But several Democrats did give tickets to Code Pink for the PResident’s innauguration.  Basically the same sort of thing.  So I’m still right.  Fake but accurate, and all that.

It is not a lie, just worded badly.  I shouldn’t have used plurals.  Sometimes I make typos like that.  I guess you’re perfect.

This practice of “sending in the clowns,” though, is one the Democrats, several different members of that party, have used on more than one occassion with no condemnation from others within the party.  So I think it is fair to paint them all with this brush.  This is obviously a tactic the party as a whole agrees with, whether you want to see that or not.

Thsi is a typo. What you did was not. You didn’t accidentally use the plural “Democrats” in place of the singular “Democrat.” Here’s your sentence:

In order to use a singular in place of a plural, the sentence would have to read:

No typo causes you to type “them” when you meant to type “him or her.” Want to know what does cause you to do that? A desire to take the actions of a single Democrat and spread it to all Democrats in the hopes of hurting the party.

Badly worded.  I was using plural because I do think this is a tactic embraced by a lot, if not necesarily all, Democrats.  The Code Pink incident backs me up on that.
