Foreign Troops In Iraq Below 100,000 This Year

That's what the Iraqi government is saying...
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of foreign soldiers in Iraq will fall below 100,000 by the end of the year, Iraq's national security adviser told The New York Times in a report posted Monday on the paper's Web site.

Mowaffak al-Rubaie, who is also chairman of a joint-Iraq-American group planning the transfer of security responsibilities to Iraqi troops from American, said the overwhelming majority of foreign troops would be out in two years, The Times said in a report from Baghdad.

The Times said Rubaie's statements offer the strongest indication yet that the Bush administration is preparing to carry out significant reductions in American forces this year.

"I believe, according to this conditions-based agreement, that the multinational forces will be reduced" to fewer than 100,000 by the end of the year, he told The Times.

"By the end of 2007, the overwhelming majority of the multinational forces will have left the country," he added.

Sounds to me like we're edging ever close to victory.

Our government has promised the new Iraqi government that our troops will not stay one moment longer than they are wanted in Iraq. If the Iraqi's want us to significantly draw down our troop levels over the next year I have little doubt that our government will do that. Plus, it seems as though this dovetails with announcements for troop withdrawal already made by the Pentagon.

Regardless, this is good news for those Americans who want to see our troops come home from Iraq. Which, from a certain perspective, is nearly every single citizen in this country.

Looks that way to me.

MI: Well, they didn’t include Murtha’s propsal to “redeploy” the troops to Okinawa, that’s true. The Republican proposal was honest and to the point. Murtha wanted to cut and run, but wasn’t straightforward about it.  Kerry nuance, I guess.

Yeah, makes you wonder why Republicans didn’t want to vote on Murtha’s proposal last year.

MI,
Because whatever the “final” wording of some proposal he may have put on the table did not have the votes, simply put.  The something to 3 vote showed that the Democrats talk a lot, but when it comes to voting for the record, they don’t have much stomach.  We could try whatever proposal Rep. Murtha would like to propose and speculate on the final vote, but you must agree that it probably would not pass.  What is your real point, apart from accusing people of being on drugs?  It really is not nice to falsely accuse people of being under the influence.

There was a vote.  It was a landslide.  something to 3.

Read my comment again: why didn’t they vote on Murtha’s proposal, not the one-liner the GOPPERS put out.

“One-liner”? Do you even know what Murtha wanted? Of course you don’t.

Probably wouldn’t have, but it sure would have told us more than the GOPPERS’ did.

No, I said that she wasn’t on drugs.  That was the problem.  Thus, the mental breakdown.

MI,
OK,a bit more of a fair comment, but it still would have implied that she had a prescription, or would have taken an illegal drug.  What I was getting to is that there are a good number of people who are not exposed to the crass behavior and speech of those like Senator Kennedy.

I respect Rep. Murtha’s Combat service in the Marines.  We have combat plans well ahead of actions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other places.  A good book on this subject without revealing classified plans is:  Every Man a Tiger by General Horner--about the 1991 liberation of Kuwait.  I was in Kuwait about a year ago.  We have not nationalized their wells.  In fact, we saved the environment after Sadam set them on fire.

Chief, I wouldn’t waste your time on this one.  MI will just try to convince you that Murtha really wasn’t calling for an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq.  It’s a redeployment.  Of course, the troops would still be leaving with Iraq still in the balance...but that’s beside the point, I guess.
