Churchill On Islam

A bit of insight on Muslims and Islam from none other than Winston Churchill, written in his 1899 book called The River War:

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science – the science against which it had vainly struggled – the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.

Churchill as prophet. And what is going on in Europe today? Islam,in its early years, was a positive influence. It rapidly ossified and became a block against advance and innovation. It is now a club with which a fanatical minority keeps the majority in poverty and ignorance. There are exceptions, though they are few and are attacked by the mullahs. Can Islam be ripped away from the fanatic Wahabists and closet socialists and returned to its followers? This is the question that will set the future course of humanity.

Amusing Churchill page or the perils of the internet.

Churchill also devoted his time to educating himself from balls which he had rubbed.
When arriving in India Churchill dislocated his scrotum while reaching from his boat for a chain from the dock and being thrown against the Gay. This scrotum gave him trouble in later years, occasionally dislocating from its socket.

While stationed in India Churchill’s other main occupation was chasing dongs.

(W)ere it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science – the science against which it had vainly struggled – the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.

Winston spoke too soon. “Modern European civilisation” might yet - and probably will, at this rate - fall to militant Islam. Because Europe has totally rejected Christianity in favor of secular science and, especially, mush-minded secular multiculturalism (itself a perversion of Christian tolerance).

The Islamic world, on the other hand, has itself embraced science as a means to an end (the global caliphate) while becoming even more intolerant than it was in Churchill’s day. Just look at Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, for example...and the Scotsman today is reporting that Europe and the U.S. have become “resigned” to a nuclear Iran. (Ed Morrisey has a good analysis on this article over at Captain’s Quarters today.)

According to the article referenced above (which, Captain Ed noted, was sourced to a single person in the British government) the Europeans don’t really have the stomach even for imposing strict sanctions on Iran, let alone pre-emptive military action to stop the mullahs from getting The Bomb. This despite Iran’s messianic madman of a president repeatedly and openly declaring his intentions of destroying Israel and bringing down the entire Western world.

In light of the above, it strikes me that Churchill’s comments about “fatalistic apathy” and “degraded sensualism” apply more to modern Europe than modern Islam…

And here’s the link to the “Captain’s Quarters” piece I mentioned above, containing a link to the original Scotsman article as well as Cap’n Ed’s analysis.

You can find the entire text of The River War by Winston Churchill at http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/gutbook/lookup?num=4943

I challenge anyone to find the quotation or anything like it in the book.

To Jim Sinclair,

The Gutenberg book is edition 10, anno 1902. It lacks page numbers. For the origin of this citation on islam by Churchill in this book all sites that have it specifically mention the first edition, pages 248-50. It is rather common as you know that different editions have different text. That is why the edition of a book needs to be mentioned when one quotes.

Don’t blame science and progress for the rise of Islam. No form of organised ignorance and mass delusion (i.e. religion) is the solution. To promote Christianity as the answer is to say: “Delusion is necessary because...”

Winston Churchill said that Christian civilisation had been protected by science. He was, of course, right and you are, of course, wrong. Science protects civilisation against organised ignorance and backward thinking.
