Lynn Swann Running For Governor In PA

Cool...

PITTSBURGH - Former Steelers star Lynn Swann declared his candidacy for Pennsylvania governor Wednesday in the city where he made his name in professional football.

He told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday afternoon that he made up his mind to run in the fall, after spending months weighing support at events around the state.

Swann, a Hall of Fame receiver and longtime TV football commentator, faces three other candidates in seeking the Republican nomination for governor %u2014 his first run for political office. The winner of the May 16 primary would likely face Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell, who is expected to seek a second four-year term.

If successful in his first bid for political office, Swann would become Pennsylvania's first black governor.

The article reports this as being no surprise as Swann has been raising money for a run for a some time, but this is the first I've heard of it.

Anybody from PA know much about his politics?

He’s said very little so far.  It will be interesting to see how Pittsburgh goes, since the Republican party doesn’t exist there.

PA Operation Clean Sweep has a ton of steam after the midnight raise last summer.

This would be a big break for the Republicans.  At the annual Governor’s Conference, we should dominate the flag football game.

Should be a great Gov. right there with his commentating skills. Oh wait he sucked at that.

As a PA resident, I think that Swann has the best chances.  A lot of people aren’t too happy with Rendell (seems he’s not as good at being governor as he was mayor), but just being a democrat and former mayor of Philly would usually be enough for him to win.  But with Swann being a Republican, he’s sure to win all of our middle “fly-over” zones.  Being a former Steelers star, he stands a good chance of swaying Pittsburgh.  And being black, he’s guaranteed Philly (as long as the black population votes).

Now whether he’s actually capable of running the state is another question entirely.  Honestly, I think there are probably better candidates, but I want Rendell out and Swann has the best chances of winning against him.

I was at the Steelers game Sunday and saw someone wearing a jersey with the number “12883258”.  Hadn’t seen that before.

Swanny will be very vulnerable on the “experience” front.

Actually I preferred him to the Token Chicks they generally use at NFL games.  I mean at least you have someone who knew what it was like to play.

(I’m not actually trying to be politically correct here)

A life-long record of working for the government is also a lack of experience.

That being said, it’s not that Swan has had experience running a business or anything.

Still it’s a great thing to have prominent blacks recognize that they have a home in the Republican party.  The Democrats have been keeping the black man poor and uneducated.

I want to see more nuts&bolts about what he would be putting forward as Governor. And who will he be fingering for key posts in state admin. As for experience, people with experience have f*ed up long enough, perhaps it is time for a change. And I could think of worse people for the job.
