What’s Coming Down The Pipe For Dorgan

With sleazy lobbyist Jack Abramoff turning into a witness for the prosecution, a lot of lawmakers in Washington are probably sweating bullets. I wonder if my own Senator Dorgan is among them.

Dorgan took $67,000 in campaign contributions from various Abramoff clients (some of it directly from Abramoff employees) and used Abramoff's suite at the MCI Center for a fundraiser. His defense for his behavior is summed up by these two points:

  1. He never met Jack Abramoff and never took any money directly from him.

  2. He has always accepted money from Indian Tribes and subsequently voted their way in Congress.

Call me crazy, but the idea that Dorgan never took money directly from Abramoff and has always been in the pocket of these Indian groups isn't very reassuring.

It will be interesting to see what comes to light about Dorgan's involvement in all this in the coming days. There are bigger fish involved with this for larger amounts of money, but since Dorgan is one of my representatives in Congress I'm most concerned with his involvement. As are most other North Dakotans, I'm sure.

I'm still amazed that he has the gall to continue his position on the Congressional panel investigating these shenanigans.

[...] It sounds like Rep. Kennedy is taking a page out of the Byron Dorgan playbook with this defense, except that Kennedy isn’t returning any of the money. WASHINGTON - Rep. Patrick Kennedy, citing his support for American Indian causes, says he has no plans to return any of the $42,500 he took from tribes represented by GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff. [...]
