Pomeroy Backing Away From “Shut Up” Comment

This is too bad.

Conservatives nationwide were downright giddy last week when Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., suggested Thursday on WDAY that Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean “shut up” about whether the U.S. can win the war in Iraq. . . .

Pomeroy said Friday he was thinking about both Republicans and Democrats when he made the remark. He’s against Republicans or Democrats who use “shrill, partisan” talk about the war.

Just when I thought the guy was capable standing up against the defeatists in his own party. Of course, Pomeroy's backpedaling is totally divorced from reality. Here are his original comments:

Jim Monk:

Well Dean recently told a San Antonio radio station that the idea that the U.S. will win the war is quote "just plain wrong" an angry Pomeroy tells WDAY news this morning that Dean's comments are inappropriate and show a lack of discipline.

Congressman Pomeroy:

Well my words to Howard Dean would be simple, shut up. He is not trusted with the senior policy responsibilities, he is the head of a political party, this is not his job, comments like he made are not helpful, they don't reflect views of democrats in congress and you know they just he does not have license at this point to be expressing his personal opinion in that way.

Audio available here.

For apparently trying to make a comment about bi-partisan, "shrill, partisan" speech that sure sounds like a slap at Howard Dean and defeatist rhetoric.

Pomeroy should have stuck to his guns. He was right on this one the first time around.

Is Pomeroy facing reelection next year? If so this flipflop is totally understandable. He needs the DNC more than they need him.

He’s in the House so yes, he does come up most even years.

My personal thought is that it wasn’t the DNC it was Sens Conrad and Dorgan.  Pomeroy hasn’t had an original idea on his own.  As one of his former Professors at the U said about him “You can’t fix stupid.”

Woooooooopsssss “One of ours went of the reservation .... better get him back, “ Conrad says.  It’s ludicrous that Rep. Pomeroy said he was talking about both Dem’s and Rep’s in his statement.

He unequivocly disavowed howard dean as the spokesman for the Democratic party. Note no mention of Republicans in that statement. I’m sure that when his elders, (Conrad and Dorgan) called him on it, he backed away.

Sad really, isn’t it? Our own “Not Ready for Prime Time Congressman”.

[...] Of course, we may still see a Cramer campaign this year. Rep. Earl Pomeroy is up for re-election as well, and that would be a match-up more to Cramer’s favor. Still, if Cramer wants to win he needs to show more confidence. And Pomeroy has been doing a fairly good job looking good for his red-state voters. He told party Chairman Howard Dean to shut up, and that rejection of national Democrat liberalism will go a long way with a lot of ND voters. Of course, Pomeroy later backed away from the comment, but either way Pomeroy won’t be an easy nut to crack. So who will run against Conrad? Who knows. As Taking Back ND notes, state Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is polling well. He’d be an obvious choice, if he’s interested in doing it. Regardless, whoever does run needs to come out of the chute at a dead sprint with a lot of energy. Conrad has been in the Senate for over two decades. At this point name recognition alone could carry an election for him in a state as politically apathetic as ND is. [...]
