Democrats Fire Back On White Flag Ad

Yesterday Republicans released an ad blasting Democrats for their defeatist rhetoric. Today Democrats are responding. First they put out this shamefully inaccurate press release, now they've trotted out another war veteran1 from their ranks to tell us all how hateful the Republicans are being for criticizing the Democrats.

Today, Senator Daniel Inouye, the Ranking Member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his service in World War II, released the following statement:

"As a Veteran of World War II, I know what it’s like to fight a war and put your life on the line every day. I also know what it takes to win a war, and I know that politics and an attack machine like the President’s plays no part in it.

"The Republican Party’s latest ad is a shameful and disgusting attempt to distract the American people from the problems in Iraq. It may improve the President’s political fortunes, but the American people and our troops will pay the price. I hope that President Bush realizes how shameful it is to play politics when what we really need is leadership, and that he will direct his Party to take down this ad immediately."

I might be willing to take Senator Inouye's statement seriously, except that if he really knows "what it takes to win a war" he'd be turning his criticism upon his own party, who have consistently sought to undermine the mission in Iraq to further their own political agenda. Their constant, pervasive negativism on the war has had a significant impact on troop morale as well as the resolve of our allies.

Yet it is the Republicans, not the Democrats, who Inouye says is doing a disservice to our troops. Well I think that's a bunch of partisan nonsense. The Republicans are behind our troops and their mission in Iraq. The Democrats are bellyaching about how our troops are "terrorizing" the Iraqis. While the troops fight and die for the cause of a free Iraq and a stable middle east the leader of the Democrat party here at home is telling the world that we cannot win.

All the Republicans did with their ad is highlight these sort of statements from Democrats. If pointing out the defeatism of the Democrats at a time when this country is at war is "disgusting" to Inouye I would suggest that he needs to get his priorities in order. I know it would be good for the Democrats if America pulled out early and let Iraq sink back into toltalitarianism, but national security and sound foreign policy come before partisan political interests.

I wish more Democrats would get that.

  1. War veterans are always an ideal spokesman for the left on the war. They see veterans as "unassailable," meaning that whenever anybody questions what they're saying the left can start complaining about how the right is smearing a war hero, as though criticizing a politician for what they have to say is equivalent to besmirching their service in the military. HAHAHAHHA!!! Up is down, black is white....  How funny it is when they ask a war hero to use his veteran status to go on the attack.

All the GOP ad is a bunch of QUOTES.  If the Dems hadn’t said them, they couldn’t use used int he ad.  If they don’t want these kind of ads, stop saying insane things like “We can’t in in Iraq”! Idiots…

Why is it that a Democrat who’s a war hero is always right, but a vet on the other side doesn’t even get any attention?

Sen. Inouye has a history of obstruction and partisan back stabbing. What I find amazing is that they have not trotted him out before this. Oh, right. His credibility was pretty much shot full of holes all through the ‘90s.

[...] Yesterday I posted this about the Democrat response to the GOP White Flag ad: War veterans are always an ideal spokesman for the left on the war. [...] Old Glory Deemed Too Jingoistic. Dems Favor White Flag Instead.  While I’m late to this party, I still had to weigh in.The new GOP ad is awesome. My friend Gus Van Horn had the line of the day on it:I see that the Democrats have progressed (Get it?) from wearing white sheets (like Senator and former Kleagle Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia) to waving them.Democrats have of course reacted with outrage, but they have no one to blame but themselves. Republicans arent the spineless, willfully ignorant, out-of-touch pessimists who have been publicly undermining the troops and their mission at every opportunity.Nope, the Democrats have brought this mess on all by themselves. The Republicans are simply pointing out what they said.Listen, if selling out the military to try and gain back House and Senate seats is now considered patriotic, then someone ought to issue John Kerry, Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi and John Murtha spanky-new Captain America uniforms. I’m sure they feel wonderful about themselves.I don’t think that the American voter in 2006 is going to reward them for their delusions of grandeur, though. Come November, the Democrats are going to remember that the white flag they’ve been waving stands for defeat (something they should recognize by now). The American people will be all too happy to hand it to them. [...] As Democrats continue to bristle at being called a bunch of defeatists Rep. John Murtha gives us all another reason to tag them with that title: “There’s no way you can win a war when not only have you lost the hearts and minds of people, when you have become their enemy,” Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., said during a press conference at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia. [...]
