Because CIA Leaks Are Only Bad If They Help Republicans

Pundit Guy:

It’s as if the whole Valerie Plame matter never happened.

ABC News is blowing their ‘EXCLUSIVE’ horn again in an ongoing investigation to ‘out’ a handful of secret CIA prisons where alleged “enhanced interrogation techniques” are authorized for use by 14 CIA officers. Officially, the CIA has declined to comment on the existence of these prisons, let alone the intensity of interrogation tactics used at any such facility. President Bush has said plainly that the U.S. does not use torture as a means of extracting information from captured terrorists. But…

ABC News has access to information which they believe will prove otherwise. And how does ABC News assume any confidence in their investigation?

Current and former CIA officers are leaking information, confidentially of course.

Given what happened with Valerie Plame, why would any current or former CIA official want to slip information to a major news media organization?

There are some opinions on the matter at the link, but my guess would be that media organizations never let a quibble like national security get in the way of a hot story.

Earlier this year ABC News set up an interview with the mastermind behind the Beslan atrocity, who is still on the lam from authorities. Rather than use their knowledge of the monster's whereabouts to bring him to justice, the news network used their knowlege to get an interview with him for ratings.

The media isn't on our side in these things. And while they aren't exaclty on the side of the enemy either, they are on the side of getting big ratings and making lots of profits. Which isn't such a bad thing, I guess, except when it macks a mockery of our countries ability to keep state secrets.

The story reads like an an administration plant.

prisoners were sometimes given hard candies, desserts and chocolates. Abu Zubaydah was partial to Kit Kats, the same treat Saddam Hussein fancied in his captivity.

The prisoners get excellent food and candy of their choice.

handcuffed and strapped feet up to a water board until after 0.31 seconds he begged for mercy and began to cooperate.

Torture is mercifully short.

life-threatening wounds were tended to by a CIA doctor specially sent from Langley headquarters to assure Abu Zubaydah was given proper care

Doctors sent from halfway around the world.

he started to cry and became as cooperative

They are such babies compared to their manly, humane interrogators.

Are you suggesting that ending Valerie Plame’s career helped Republicans?

Okay. Your headline looked (looks, apparently) like it could have been written by Michael Moore.

My headline makes a valid point.  CIA leaks are bad when they can be used to bash Republicans.  They’re good when they can be used to get a scoop on a hot story.

Sort of a double-standard, don’t you think?  Or were you just going to ignore the point of the post?

I’m suggesting that the revelation of the reality of Wilson’s trip (that it was a smear campaign orchestrated with the help of Plame) helped Republicans dispel some untruths being perpetuated by their political enemies.

But I should have picked better words for the headlines, because I’m not at all convinced that the release of Plames information was a “leak,” per se.

You’re correct, WOOF.  It takes REAL balls to murder women and children, unlike those sissy interrogators.
