HIllary Heckled By Anti-War Nuts
Newsmax - 2008 presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was heckled by a crowd of high school and college-age students in her hometown of Chicago yesterday, with ABC News reporting that security guards eventually "dragged some of the protesters out of the auditorium."
The former first lady was onstage only a few seconds when the crowd erupted with shouts of: "Troops out now! Troops out now!"
As anti-war leaflets poured from one balcony, umbrellas were unfurled from another displaying the message, "Out of Iraq."
Mrs. Clinton initially tried to bargain with her critics, pleading: "Give me a chance and I'll address that if you'll then be quiet."
The MoveOn.org/Michael Moore/Cindy Sheehan base of the Democrat party isn't too happy with all the fence-sitting on Iraq Democrat politicians have been engaging in. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess, depending on your perspective) Hillary isn't coming down off the fence any time soon:
After delivering her prepared remarks, Mrs. Clinton returned to the subject of Iraq.
"I disagree with those who believe we should immediately pull out," she told the crowd. "And I disagree with those who say we should stay there forever."
Then, looking pained and closing her eyes briefly, the former first lady said: "It would be wonderful if we could turn the clock back - but we cannot."
What good would turning back the clock do? The only way that would make a difference is if we could all go back knowing what we do now about Iraq. I know that's what Democrats want to do. They want to go back and change their stance on Iraq based on what they know know. Heck, they're trying very hard to do it even without the convenience of time travel. But its not working out too well for them, as the above episode indicates. The anti-war left wants Democrats to call for troop withdrawal now, but pandering to that base makes the Democrats look like a bunch of defeatist morons. So they're stuck up on the fence. Supporting victory in Iraq isn't politically convenient, but neither is calling for cut-and-run.
What will the anti-war base on the left do if they get too unhappy with the Dems? Its hard to say. My guess is about half of them will vote for Democrats anyway, and the rest will vote for a third-party candidate. If they vote at all. If the Dems get their act together and come out strong for victory in Iraq they could potentially bring some of the right's base (who are already less-than-enthused with GOP leadership on domestic issues) over to their side, but there's no telling if Democrats will be able to pull it together enough in time, and in a convincing enough manner, for that to happen.
