The President Has An Exit Strategy

Scott McClellan:

There is a strong consensus building in Washington in favor of President Bush's strategy for victory in Iraq. As the Iraqi security forces gain strength and experience, we can lessen our troop presence in the country without losing our capability to effectively defeat the terrorists. Today, Sen. Biden described a plan remarkably similar to the Administration's plan to fight and win the war on terror. We welcome Sen. Biden's voice in the debate. We are pleased he shares our view that the way to a democratic and peaceful Iraq is through aggressively training Iraqi police and soldiers, rebuilding the country's infrastructure and forging political compromises between Iraqi factions.

Details of the President's plan for Iraq at the link.

For the last couple of years Democrats have been demanding an exit strategy, a "timetable for withdrawal" from Iraq. The point they've been missing is that we cannot simply set an arbitrary date for ending the mission in Iraq. The President has had an exit strategy all along. He's been telling us what it is again and again since Saddam fell: America will stand down when Iraq can stand up. When the government in Iraq is capable of governing and the security forces are capable of protecting the people and the government America will depart, and not one single day before that.

This is a very simple concept to grasp, yet still we have Democrats (John Murtha, most recently) clamoring for withdrawal. As though ending the war, not winning the war, were the goal. Murtha's resolution called for withdrawal from Iraq "at the earliest time practicable" with absolutely no mention of what objectives had to be achieved before the withdrawal could begin. In essence, his resolution would have had our troops coming home as soon as they could pack up and leave. Which would have left Iraq twisting in the wind. All the sacrifices we've made, all the hard work done by our soldiers, would have been for naught.

The President has a plan for Iraq. He's always had a plan. It has always been clear what our objectives are in Iraq. The President's political enemies don't want you to think he has a plan. They want you to feel hopeless when you think about Iraq, because that hopeless feeling will make you loose faith in the current leadership and cause them to win elections.

Because, you see, its not about sound foreign policy for the left, its about getting back into power.

Well, Mike won’t respond...but I’ll expand my comments a bit.

The “plan” being endlessly called for by the left and the media is a decisive pull-out date.  They want a date for when the troops will come home.  The “plan” they want includes no criteria for victory.

The President has maintained, through thick and thin, that the troops will come home when we win.  And by win, he has meant a democratic Iraq that is capable of defending itself.  We cannot put a timetable on stability and security in Iraq because how long that will take can’t really be quantified.  Could it take another six months?  Another year?  Two years?  We don’t know, but what we must make sure our enemies do know is that we’re not leaving until the job is finished.

That’s all the “exit strategy” we need.

I guess it depends on what you mean by “plan”, doesn’t it?  More word games from the MSM.

Very true...can’t argue with that. I also agree that the plan can’t involve a fixed calandar with a withdrawl circled in red.

This post would have been far more interesting if you had spent three paragraphs discussing his plan in more detail.

We go there, we kick out Saddam, we protect the peaceful Iraqis so they can get a functioning govt together, we help them stabilize the country, we kick terrorist ass, we leave.  Enough details?

There will never be enough details for people like MI, robert.  The point is not sound foreign policy, the point is that their side wins.

MI:  Ahh! I get it!  Too straightforward for you; not enough nuance, I guess.  So sorry.

The “not enough details” line is the way the left is going to parse this.  They know they can’t be for immediate withdrawal now that they’ve been called out, and they know they can’t be for outright defeat...so they’re demanding “details!”

Because “staying the course until Iraq is free, democratic and able to defend itself” just isn’t enough DETAILS!

So what do you want, MI...battle strategies?  Briefings on specific missions?  Frankly, I think that’s a bit unreasonable and sort of a nonsense way to keep your petty criticism alive.

The objective is a free, democratic and secure Iraq.  The way we’re getting there is by tracking down and killing the terrorists, training Iraqi security forces and protecting the government.  Within those three things are probably hundreds of other missions all in furtherance of the main objective.

But I guess you’ll keep waying that Bush doesn’t have a plan until somebody takes the time to relate to you what each and every soldier in Iraq is doing.  Because never being satisfied is just part of the game.

Again, this statement is the goal, not the plan.  If I told my customer that his web site will be delivered to him when it’s completed and able to run without errors, he wouldn’t just take my word for it.  He wants to know how I plan to get there.

My critique was of the post more than the content.  As I said above, the entire post would have been a lot more interesting if you had discussed his plan instead of going on the offensive against the Dems.  That tactic only makes it seem like Bush really doesn’t have a plan.

Awww c’mon MI.  Quit copping out.

You know I’m right.  Bush has it right on Iraq, you just don’t want to admit it.

[...] How is this any different from the President’s strategy for Iraq? How is this any different from “as Iraqis stand up we will stand down?” Bush said that in June of this year. He said the same thing in August of 2003, September of 2003 and May of 2004. [...]
