Human Rights Watch Getting In Way Of War On Terror
BRUSSELS (AFX) - The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has secret prisons in eastern Europe, notably in Poland and Romania, where Al-Qaeda suspects may be held, Human Rights Watch said.
'Human Rights Watch (HRW) has carried out independent investigations which suggest that the secret installations in eastern Europe...are in Poland and Romania,' said Jean-Paul Marthoz, a spokesman for the group's Belgian branch.
'Our inquiries up until now seem to indicate that Poland and Romania are the countries that received prisoners held by the CIA,' he said.
He refused to rule out that the CIA could be holding 'ghost prisoners' elsewhere in eastern Europe.
The Washington Post newspaper reported yesterday that the US intelligence agency was holding Al-Qaeda suspects in prisons in eight countries including Thailand, Afghanistan and 'several democracies in eastern Europe'.
In London, the Financial Times quoted HRW's Washington advocacy director, Tom Malinowski, as saying that the US-based group believed, based on flight records of CIA jets, that Poland and Romania hosted such secret prisons.
'We have a high degree of confidence that such facilities exist in at least Poland and Romania,' he said.
All of this controversy was kicked off by a leak from government bureaucrats. This leak has now embarrassed the U.S. government, two of it's allies and has more than likely been a major setback to intelligence gathering in the war on terror.
A setback that could very well cost American lives.
All because some unelected government bureaucrats (not the duly-elected commander-in-chief of our military) took it upon themselves to shape our foreign and military policy.
Now I ask, is this leak of classified information worthy of investigating? Will the Democrats demand full disclosure as to who leaked this classified information related to our national security? Because certainly if the identity of a CIA agent who hasn't worked in the field in over half a decade is worthy of a two year investigation at the cost of tens of millions of tax dollars a leak identifying covert CIA bases is.
Right?
