Picture Of Ketchikan International

Recently there was a mighty dust-up in Congress about pork barrel spending. Republican Tom Coburn put forth legislation that would have diverted some of this spending (specifically $232 million for a bridge in Ketchikan to an island that hold's that's city's airport) to infrastructure rebuilding efforts in New Orleans.

Ted Stevens and his fellow Alaskan legislators bitterly defended their bridge, calling it a "neccessary" expenditure. Stevens himself even threatened to step down.

In the interest of exploring just how "neccessary" this bridge is in Ketchikan I present the following picture of Ketchikan International Airport:

Think it's worth $232 million to connect that to the mainland?

Yeah, me neither. As far as I'm concerned, if Ketchikan wants road access to their airport they can build it themselves.

Too bad 82 Senators don't agree with us.

Make that 85 Senators who don’t agree. Missing this vote was the same as voting against it.

If you gave me the contract, I be I could move the whole airport to the other side for less than 232 million

I don’t doubt that, Coyote, but the problem is (if I’m remembering the geography of the area correctly, it’s been a while since I’ve been there) there’s not really another place to build it.  It’s all mountains and coastline.

For $232 million, you could probably build some more mainland.
