A Quick Take on Brian Williams

Did anyone else catch NBC's Brian Williams on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart?

He blasted the troops, police and firefighters in New Orleans who are trying to restore/preserve order and peace to a city with the recent memories of deadly looting and violent crime. Sorry if they are running a little low on patience, especially for the media circus swirling around them as they try and do their jobs. Remember these are the guys the media blasted Bush for not having down there.

And he kept on about how many "automatic weapons" the police and troops have on them. At one point he said and I paraphrase, "right now there are more automatic weapons in the city of New Orleans than any other place on Earth."

The thing is he was going on about "automatic weapons" like troops and police having guns is a bad thing. Has he forgot about the mayhem that just erupted there and the scattered outbreaks that could easily reoccur?

And then at the tail end of the interview (of which I only saw the last half) Stewart asked if the federal government (read: George W. Bush) is taking too much of the heat for Katrina and if not enough heat is being put on the local and state governments. Brian's reply was hilarious, "I don't do opinions."

Yeah right, what a hack! After the tirade he just finished up as well as his theoretical question (read: statement) comparing American colonial patriots favorably to terrorists in Iraq I think we know that Brian isn't afraid of "doing an opinion." And I think we all know which side of the aisle his not-so-subtle opinions will be falling on. Anyone naive enough to think that the liberal media was starting to straighten it out after the retirement of the Big 3 should really reconsider. It looks like they aren't going to change a thing.

Fiscally conservative, socially liberal?

His social views are emerging as hostile to Republican viewpoints yes.

As far as his fiscal views I haven’t seen much to indicate a particular slant, but I’d bet the Vegas odds would put “fiscal conservative” as a 4:1 underdog.

I’m starting to think I should be attending all those meetings with Shultzie and the du Toits out at the old barn…

In case you didn’t already know, that was not a new episode last night.  It was a rerun from back when the Katrina news was still very very fresh and overwhelming.

Williams sensationalized just like his twit colleagues and then he presumes to lecture based on his own sensationalism.

This is just more evidence for the idea that talking heads should stick to reading what’s on the prompter.

Why is an opposing viewpoint “hostile”?

God, what an insufferable jackass. That particular statement is so ridiculous it almost amounts to a cry for help. Don’t worry, Brian. You won’t get in trouble for saying dumb things. It’s not like anyone watches the 6:00 news anymore.

In fact, would we even know Williams said this if he hadn’t done it on the Daily Show?

Is it “ridiculous” in the sense that it’s untrue, or is it “ridiculous” in the sense that it’s nothing to worry about, or is it “ridiculous” in some other way?

Alex: What makes that statement “ridiculous”?

Dave, you can’t possibly be serious.

Can you?

Having done it myself many times Joshua, you could’ve added a link to the interview clip that is available on the Daily Show web site.

It cuts down on having to ‘paraphrase’ or distorting someone’s opnion to fit your agenda.

Can to explain to us how Josh distorted anyone’s opinion, or does distort, to you, mean “saying things I disagree with.”

Actually the paraphrase was spot-on and if you notice, the title of the post should have tipped you off that maybe it was just a quick take as the first three words of the title were “ A Quick Take.”

This is what I meant by ‘distortion’. And, if you take the entire interview in its proper context, you’ll see Williams did nothing of the sort.

If I also took the exact same ‘automatic weapons’ sentence out of context, I could’ve spun it to say Williams praising the Bush administration for restoring order to the city.

But, the video clip wouldn’t back up that assertion either.

Add Dave to the willfully ignorant category right alongside TCF and Don Myers

He criticized Michael Brown and FEMA for the lack of knowledge of the scope of the situation. (national effort)

He criticized police officers and fire-fighters were being trigger-happy. (local effort)

Sounds good to me. His comments were mixed on whether the presence of automatic weapons was good or bad; he also praised the state police for providing him and his crew “cover” while getting into his van.

All in all, I’ve seen more liberal bias in an inkblot.

Either TCF…

A) Didn’t watch the same interview I did

or

B) Is being willfully ignorant.

Which would not be unusual for a partisan twit like him.

What I saw was Brian Williams throwing everybody under the bus that he could.

Except when Jon Stewart gave him the opportunity to spread some blame over to Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco.

I provided reasons and evidence to support my conclusions. Maybe they’re flawed, maybe they’re not.

Provide evidence for YOUR claim:

What I saw was Brian Williams throwing everybody under the bus that he could.

and we’ll see where we stand. Until you do that this conversation is a pissing contest.

I’m a Jon Stewart fan, and I think Brian Williams is a fine anchor, so my biases may be affecting my interpretation. But until you explain yours (ie, your interpretation), we will never know.

You guys always can dish out negative comments, but you can’t stand them in return-And by the way FOX news is crap and totally biased-that’s a media outlet and it’s not liberal-I’m tired of hearing about a liberal media like anchors really have that much power-heads of corporations do like General Electric who actually own the stations!!!! Get a new agrument please-you guys are like a broken record-you must just like to hear yourself talk, being self-rightous, and ignorant!

Why not comment on the Bush, Rice, etc. b/c unlike Brian Williams they actually are running the country! Which is sad!

Rachel said, All republicans can kiss my ass! You guys always can dish out negative comments, but you can’t stand them in return...

Rachel is obviously new to the website.

And by the way FOX news is crap and totally biased...

Why did you bring up Fox News? You’re in a blind ramble.

I’m tired of hearing about a liberal media like anchors really have that much power...

Then don’t listen.

...heads of corporations do like General Electric who actually own the stations!!!!

If you’re correct, than I have to question why close to 90 percent of the reporters self identify as liberal and/or Democrat. Who has more power to shape opinion? The guy delivering the news or the guy far removed from the anchor chair?

Get a new agrument please-you guys are like a broken record-you must just like to hear yourself talk, being self-rightous, and ignorant!

What a gutter mouth you have. In any regard Rachel, you need to get an argument. So far you have brought up points that nobody has addressed have brought up and nurmerous ad hominems. Where, do tell, is your argument and what, do tell, is your point? Did you just feel the need to mindlessly rant?

Why not comment on the Bush, Rice, etc. b/c unlike Brian Williams they actually are running the country! Which is sad!

As of right now there are 7824 posts to this website. MANY of them are comments on Bush and Rice. Only ten mention Brian Williams in any way.

Buy a clue before you ignorantly, self-righteously, and rudely go off on us Rachel. Your comment only showed us that you just like to hear yourself talk. Which is sad!
