London Attacks Not Related To Iraq?
So far President Bush, Sec. Rumsfeld and Tony Blair himself are all on record as saying that the attacks in London have nothing to do with the on-going war in Iraq. But I'm wondering to myself, is that really true?
Why are we in Iraq? Because of 9/11 and the global threat of extreme Islamic terrorism, right? Saddam Hussein's regime was a known sponsor of terror and his country had become a breeding ground for jihadists. We are still fighting that war on terrorism in Iraq and elsewhere. The terrorists are responding by attempting (and every once in a while succeeding in) attacks on western targets. Which means that the London terror attacks are very much because we're in Iraq, right? Isn't it a bit foolish to say otherwise?
Of course, admitting that the terror attacks in London have to do with the fact that Britain is fighting in Iraq will bring on all sorts of "but if we weren't fighting them they'd leave us alone" claims from the anti-war crowd...but the war on terrorism isn't that simplistic.
I'm convinced that the London terror attacks are linked to the war in Iraq, but also that these attacks would be happening whether we were fighting in Iraq or not. Believing otherwise would also mean believing that after the successful execution of the 9/11 attacks the terrorists would, having made their point, given up their jihad against the west. Which isn't something most people, myself included, are going to buy.
If you ask me, Bush and Blair are afraid to acknowledge the fact that the attacks in London are part of the war in Iraq because anti-war critics will use that as support for ending the war. What we have to realize is the fact that the enemy is fighting us isn't all that surprising. We are at war. The fact that occasionally our enemy can reach out and hit us on our home turf is scary, down-right mortifying, but is no excuse to stop fighting them.
Pulling back behind our borders and hoping that leaving the enemy alone will convince them to leave us alone is just not a good solution to the terrorism problem we face. Going to where the terrorists are and fighting them there is.
The simple truth of the matter is, folks, that those without swords can still die upon them.
