California To Put Emission Controls On Cows

In a follow-up to this post about extensive new permit requirements for simple household electronic chores (like running stereo wires) in California, the crazy nanny-state bureaucrats are now looking to regulate emissions from the state's cattle.

No, I'm not joking.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Dairies are the No. 1 source of smog-producing pollution in the San Joaquin Valley, producing more than even cars and light trucks, according to a report released by air regulators.

The San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District, in a report released Monday, has determined that a cow annually emits 19.3 pounds of volatile organic compounds, the gases that contribute to smog. That is 50 percent more than currently thought, the report said.

At that new rate, dairies in the San Joaquin Valley produce more than 50 tons of VOCs a day, exceeding the amount released by cars and light trucks in the region by nearly 20 tons a day, district officials said.

"Without a doubt, we have a legal and public health responsibility to move forward with (regulation)," said Dave Crow, the district's Air Pollution Control Officer. "This emissions factor provides us with some insight into what each of the processes on the dairy contribute."

How, exactly, do they plan on regulating cow emissions? Its not like you can stop a cow from burping or pooping. The only solution, as far as I can see, is to limit the number of cows. A move that will no-doubt drive ranchers from the state resulting in higher beef prices for Californians.

And who in California is most likely to suffer from artificially inflated food prices? My guess would be lower-income families. But hey, its for the environment, right? Never mind that the data used as the basis for these findings (that are almost assuredly going to result in regulation) wasn't even collected from California cattle but was based on the findings of a British study and information gathered from Texas cattle.

The district relied on research conducted in Great Britain and a feedlot study from Texas for its data on the acids.

"We've been cautioning them that a large component of their estimate is something for which there was very little California data," said Charles Krauter, a researcher at California State University-Fresno.

Absolutely amazing.

California never fails to boggle the mind.  And what makes it scary is I’m sure Mr. Crow said it with a straight face.
