So Much For Protecting Plame’s Identity

WASHINGTON, July 1 - For nearly two years, the investigation into the leak of a covert C.I.A. officer's name has unfolded clamorously in the nation's capital, with partisan brawling on talk shows, prosecutors interviewing President Bush and top White House officials, and the imminent prospect that reporters could go to jail for contempt of court.

But the woman at the center of it all, Valerie E. Wilson, has kept her silence, showing the discipline and discretion that colleagues say made her a good spy. As her husband, Joseph C. Wilson IV, has become a highly visible critic of the administration and promoted his memoirs, Ms. Wilson has ferried their 5-year-old twins to doctors' appointments, looked after their hilltop house in the upscale Palisades neighborhood of Washington and counseled women with postpartum depression. . . .

Ms. Wilson, 42, whose husband said she has used her married name both at work and in her personal life since their 1998 marriage, declined to speak for this article. She has guarded her privacy, with rare exceptions. She posed with her husband for a Vanity Fair photographer, wearing sunglasses and with a scarf over her blond hair. She drafted an op-ed article to correct what she felt were distortions of her and her husband's actions, but the C.I.A. would not authorize its publication, saying it would "affect the agency's ability to perform its mission."

Here's the photo from Vanity Fair:

Valerie Plame

I'm no intelligence expert, but to me that certainly doesn't look like a CIA agent trying to protect her identity. And even if she had been wearing sunglasses and a head scarf, how would anyone expect to remain low-key while attending an event with the likes of David Bowie and Puff Daddy?

Fair enough.  But what is an undercover CIA operative who wishes to remain low key doing posing for Vanity Fair at all?

Ms. Plame wasn’t undercover back in Jan 2003, thanks to President Rove. Back then she and her husband were fighting back against a vicious smear campaign being conducted by the White House.

If you had a memory that stretched back farther than last week’s GOP talking points, you might have realized that.

Hey Genius! Did it ever occur to you that the photo mentioned in the article and the photo you provided might be two DIFFERENT photos from two DIFFERENT points in time?

Yeah!  What Don said I mean sheesh don’t you know that Puff Daddy is so 1990’s.  Sheesh man.

Of course, Don is right in that when the first VF picture was taken Mrs. Plame/Wilson was an outed agent.  The hilarity/silliness is the first picture with her wearing the scarf and sunglasses.  To be sure Plame and her husband are milking this for all it is worth.

I recall some talk that Valerie Plame was not the “covert C.I.A. officer,” “secret agent,” “CIA operative,” or “undercover agent” that everyone is talking about.  She may have been employed by the CIA, but that does not a CIA operative make.

While I’m sure the CIA would like to keep the names of all of its employees secret, unless she was a “secret agent,” I don’t think that any law was broken.  Further, since Novak released her name to the world, why aren’t charges being filed against him?  If she is a “secret agent,” then he is as guilty of breaking the law as the person who provided the name in the first place.

Yea, sure, Steve, there was no law broken!  What are you Matlock or Perry Mason?  Why the heck would there be a grand jury assembled?  Let’s see the Prez is called to testify, hhhmmm, Rove as well.  Sounds as if there’s nothing to it just must be a lessons in civics for those participating.  The question you need to ask and are close to getting there, I’ll give you that, is what’s up with Novak?  What kind of a deal did he cut or why isn’t he more “involved” in this story at this time.  Very curious.  But please Steve do not minimize what was done by trying to cut down Ms. Plame.

Palme and Wilson are enjoying their revenge. Someone in the whitehouse did something stupid. They ruined Palme’s career and smeared Wilson.

Knowing that Rove has been draged in front of a grand jury and Bush had to endure an hour and ten minutes of questioning by the Special Prosecutor has to taste sweet.

Excellent question.  Any takers?

Novak may have given up his source to the Grand Jury.

Grand Juries are assembled to determine whether or not there is evidence to warrant an indictment.

The question is still open: Was Plame was an undercover agent?  From what I can find, her employment was verified by the CIA, certainly something that would not have been done if she were a covert agent.  And from what I can tell, the law applies to undercover agents, not all CIA employees.

But please Steve do not minimize what was done by trying to cut down Ms. Plame.

I’m hardly cutting her down by questioning whether or not she was an undercover agent. The answer to that question will answer all. If she is/was, the law was broken, indictments will be handed down, and people will be prosecuted. If not, as the evidence currently suggests, then nothing will come of this.
