Durbin Apologizes

WASHINGTON - Under fire from Republicans and some fellow Democrats, Sen. Dick Durbin apologized Tuesday for comparing American interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Nazis and other historically infamous figures.

"Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line," the Illinois Democrat said. "To them I extend my heartfelt apologies."

His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks.

"They're the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them," he said.

He's sorry if we believe his remarks crossed the line? How about being sorry for making remarks that did cross the line?

Tears or not, this apology strikes me as insincere, aimed more at getting Durbin out from under pressure than anything else.

Ian has video of the Senator's apology.

I disagree, totally.  I heard the entire speech on Hewwitt’s show on the way home from work and it sounded completely sincere.  While he probably should have left out the Lincoln quote his apology was complete.

Here are a couple of money quotes:

“I’m also sorry if anything I said in any way cast a negative light on our fine men and women in the military. I went to Iraq just a few months ago with Senator Harry Reid and a bipartisan Senate delegation. When you look in the eyes of the soldiers you see your son and daughter. They are the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them.â€?

“Mr. President, I have come to understand that was a very poor choice of words. I tried to make this very clear last Friday that I understood to those analogies to the Nazis, Soviets and others were poorly chosen.

In the end, I don’t want anything that I may have said detract from the love for my country, my respect for those who bravely risk their lives each day for our security, and this Senate which I am so honored to serve as a member. I offer my apology for those offended by my words

I think we need to accept this and move on.  We need to accept that sometimes people misspeak, but when it happens we need to accept the apologies and move on.  We cannot crusify him now as they did to Lott and others.  We need to be better than that.

I agree.  We should move on.  If he does it again, though, we should get the Bruno brothers from Chicago to pay him a little social call.

Durtbag Durbin throws gasoline on the fires of hate throughout the world and he’s sorry? He’s a SORRY example of a US Senator that is for sure.

And if we applied the “Trent Lott” standard, he could take his SORRY butt out of the Asst. Minority Leaders office.

Oh… I forgot… standards of conduct, like ethics and the law were only meant to be applied to Republicans…

If we keep folding every time Dems fake an apology, then why are we even trying? The man and his party continue to sling this crap all over America. They have and continue to defend these statements. He did not appologize for his comments, he apollogized because people are so stupid they can not grasp his deep and meaningful crap.

Unfortunately, all the screeching does not address the facts. Is the FBI report cited by Senator Durbin true or false?  Finally, please tell me that the above blogger who suggested a visit from Chicago thugs was speaking metaphorically...like Senator Durbin did.

When did it become an “FBI report”?

Carrick is a commentator, not a blogger.  In any regard, what is it to you?  Are you a grammer nazi now?  (speaking “metaphorically” of course)

[...] 10,000 Angels will swear you were wrong  I’ve watched the video of Sen. Durbin’s apology and I think it was more than slimy. He apologised to “some” who thought his remarks were in poor taste. He invoked the words of Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, to indicate that, if his words turned out to be correct, he would be vindicated. I can think of several quotations from Lincoln and one from Mark Twain that he could have used with more effectiveness and would have been more apropos. First, these from Lincoln:He reminds me of the man who murdered both his parents, and then when the sentence was about to be pronounced, pleaded for mercy on the grounds that he was orphan. How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg. What kills the skunk is the publicity it gives itself. No, Sir, it is the politician who is the first to sound the alarm (which, by the way, is a false one.) It is he, who, by these unholy means, is endeavoring to blow up a storm that he may ride upon and direct.Or possibly this one from Mark Twain:.It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.Linked to: The Captain, Inside Larry’s Head, Un-Common Sense, Ed Driscoll, Balance Sheet, The Galvin Opinion, Jawa Report, Ramblings’ Journal, Iowa Voice, Decision ‘08, The Strata-Sphere, The American Mind, The Unalienable Right, GOP and the City, Right Wing Nut House - skunk also mentioned here, MacsMind, The Dead Pundit Bluto, The Political Teen - with the video, Blackfive, Michelle Malkin, Another Rovian Conspiracy, Undiscovered Country, The Red Stater, Conservative Thinking, Right in Texas, Southern Appeal, VodkaPundit, Backcountry Conservative, Dean Esmay, The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler (nice doggie), Interested Participant, QandO, Brain Fertilizer, PoliPundit, Jo’s Cafe, Ace of Spades, Confederate Yankee, Daly Thoughts, Prof. Bainbridge, Spoons, RantingProfs, South Dakota Politics, Scrappleface, Say Anything, The Right Report, Arthur Chrenkoff, Michael Williams, Baseball Crank, Liberty Street, . // posted by Mark in Mexico @ 9:39 PM email this post   postCount(’111941021124228751’wink; | postCountTB(’111941021124228751’wink; Main Page [...]
