Kerry Releases Records

Some on the left are pointing to this story as proof that Kerry has finally released all of his military records, as promised during his campaign, and that the issues surrounding them should now be over. Unfortunately, I'm not exactly sure that this is true.

WASHINGTON -- Senator John F. Kerry, ending at least two years of refusal, has waived privacy restrictions and authorized the release of his full military and medical records.

The records, which the Navy Personnel Command provided to the Globe, are mostly a duplication of what Kerry released during his 2004 campaign for president, including numerous commendations from commanding officers who later criticized Kerry's Vietnam service.

The lack of any substantive new material about Kerry's military career in the documents raises the question of why Kerry refused for so long to waive privacy restrictions. An earlier release of the full record might have helped his campaign because it contains a number of reports lauding his service. Indeed, one of the first actions of the group that came to be known as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was to call on Kerry to sign a privacy waiver and release all of his military and medical records.

The question remains: Why did Kerry only release his records to his friendly, hometown newspaper? Obviously he doesn't want some of his personal information floating around in the general public, but he could have released them to several news agencies in addition to the Globe. Like Fox News maybe? Or CNN? MSNBC?

No, I think this release to the Globe is pretty clearly Kerry's way of trying to make the issue go away. When it crops up in the future he can point to this and say that he has released all of his records. And he has, its just that this "release" of records is about as convincing as having his mother vouch for the contents of his military records.

If Kerry wants his critics to be convinced he'll release his records a bit more widely. Not that, at this point, I care much what Kerry does with this records. At this point he's delayed the release of them for so long, and in the process done untold amounts of damage to his own political career, that's its obvious to anyone with a modicum of common sense that he's hiding something which we'll probably never learn about.

More indications of Kerry running again in 2008.

And how about ‘Kerry the Intellectual’ and ‘Bush the Moron’ having nearly identical grades at Yale? In fact I overheard on CNN this morning that Bush actually outscored Kerry 77-76 under the grading structure at Yale at the time.

Does that make Bush smarter than liberals thought or Kerry dumber than liberals thought??

Among the things that Kerry has not allowed released are his college transcripts.  Funny, most good-paying jobs require that as part of the application process.

Actually, it’s been pretty well established from the test scores that are available that Kerry is only slight above average in intelligence, maybe 115.  Bush shows up around 125 (except on those hoax websites that people from the left love to believe), and Gore is 135.  More details after those on the left pop a vessel when being told that a) Kerry is not a rocket surgeon, and b) Bush is actually more intelligent than a chimp.

Keeping to Rob’s topic, if Kerry had released his records, there would be some new documentation that we know to be missing, such as his discharge papers.  Secondly, if he has signed the form 180, the documents are available to anybody who requests them, not just the Globe.  Color me dubious on this one.

Actually I think Rob is correct in saying that the Boston Globe was granted access to them only. He released the files to them only.

This from the AP stories....
“The records, which the Navy Personnel Command provided to the Globe, are mostly a duplication of what Kerry released during his 2004 campaign for president, including numerous commendations from commanding officers who later criticized Kerry’s Vietnam service”

I can release lets say some medical information to only my employer and not the general public. Or I could release my t-scripts from college to an employer but not the general public. That is what Kerry did with this form 180.

Joshua, I think you are correct about the limited nature of the permission.  However, you may want to check out this post.  Look in particular for John “Lying Liar” O’Neill’s comments about this story.  This is particularly germane:

We called for Kerry to execute a form which would permit anyone to examine his full and unexpulgated military records at the Navy Department and the National Personnel Records Center. Instead he executed a form permitting his hometown paper to obtain the records currently at the Navy Department.

Anyway, O’Neill’s comments are an interesting read for anybody with an open mind, or with an axe to grind for JFK the lesser.

Kerry is old news.  Even the “Kerry isn’t smarter than Bush” thing is tiresome.  My only interest in this whole thing is watching the god-awful way Kerry has handled the situation with his military records.

There must be something really, really bad in them to cause all this.

Rob says: Kerry is old news.

Well, like it or not, this wack job is still a front runner for the 2008 DNC presidential nomination.  I’m sure that many in the Democratic Party wish he would quietly “go away”.  On the other hand, if he has learned from his myriad of mistakes, he might actually be the most formidable candidate on either side.  Assuming no more skeletons in his closet of course…
