Ultrasounds Criminalized Without Doctor’s Order

Hmm...

SPRINGFIELD -- Pro-abortion forces won a victory in the Illinois House Wednesday as State Rep. Rosemary Mulligan (R-Park Ridge) successfully passed HB 2492 which would make it a criminal offense for an ultrasound to be administered without a doctor's order.

Mulligan said that Planned Parenthood and the Illinois State Medical Society encouraged her to sponsor the legislation because there was a concern about long exposure of fetuses to ultrasound waves.

I have a hard time believing that Planned Parenthood, an organization famous for promoting the killing of perfectly healthy unborn children and taking pride in it, is concerned over fetal exposure to ultrasound waves.

I think this is the more likely answer.

Mulligan, who is a strong abortion advocate, said that an ultrasound should not be done for political reasons to make anyone change their minds about any particular purpose.

They don't want mothers to see that what is inside them is not a simple clump of cells but a child waiting to be born. In other words, they don't want the mothers getting a good look at the victims.

Well, the AMA has argued that the effects of ultrasound waves on a fetus fetus are unknown and they should be used only when needed.  There was a discussion about this on Catallarchy some time ago.

It may simply be a CYA approach by the FDA (it wasn’t the AMA).

"they don’t want the mothers getting a good look at the victims.”

Right on Rob.

That’s the FDA actually.

If there is a legitimate medical reason for regulating ultrasounds I’m all for it.  The point I was getting at was Planned Parenthood’s motivations in this.

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

Every pregnant woman receives at least one ultrasound during the course of their pregnancy (from my personal experience) so I don’t see the argument that one ultrasound on a baby that is slated for execution is going to be a terrible thing…

An analogy:

“Don’t give that prisoner a cigarette to smoke with his last words, we’re worried about his health!”

*Then he gets executed.*

Hus says: Well, the [FDA] has argued that the effects of ultrasound waves on a fetus fetus are unknown and they should be used only when needed.

This is a reasonable caution, butI haven’t seen one iota of scientific evidence for any soft-tissue harm from ultrasound at the frequencies and intensities that are being used.  On the other hand, there is certainly reason to suspect that exposure to loud rock music to late term fetuses (and neonates in general) does have negative consequences for their hearing.
