U.S. Fired On Released Italian Hostage?
ROME (AP) - Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said Friday that he has asked the U.S. ambassador for explanations about the shooting death of an Italian intelligence officer in Iraq, shortly after an Italian hostage was freed from her Iraqi captors.
"Given that the fire came from an American source I called in the American ambassador," Berlusconi told reporters. "I believe we must have an explanation for such a serious incident, for which someone must take the responsibility."
Update:
Sounds like a case of mistaken identity at a road block.
ROME --ť A freed Italian hostage was injured and an Italian secret service agent killed Friday after a U.S. armored vehicle fired on a car in which they were riding in Iraq, two Italian news agencies reported.
The Apcom and ANSA news agencies said that Giuliana Sgrena, a reporter for the communist daily Il Manifesto, was in a hospital in Iraq with a shoulder injury. The shooting occurred at a roadblock while the car was heading to the airport, the reports said.
The editor of Il Manifesto, Gabriele Polo, said the secret service agent was killed when he threw himself over the freed hostage to protect her from fire, according to Apcom. He also said Sgrena was in the hospital but was not seriously injured.
Update:
It appears as though the convoy taking Sgrena to safety tried to avoid an American road block thus triggering the attack.
The Jawa Report has much more.
