500,000 Served

As long as current site traffic patterns hold Say Anything will get its 500,000th unique visitor sometime later today. Not that you should care, I'm just patting myself on the back.

In reality this benchmark was probably passed a long time ago. Sitemeter isn't the most accurate tool for measuring traffic, its frequently down and there was about a three month interlude about a year ago where I didn't use it.

But anyway, its pretty much all that I have. And its free, so you can't beat that.

To celebrate I'm having Mark Jaquith install a spell check option for all you commenters. He'll also be upgrading the site to Wordpress 1.5. I can't think of a better way to acknowledge this than to make the reading/commenting experience here a little bit better. I'm not sure when this will be happening, but look for the changes some time in the next week or so.

Also, if you've got any other suggestions for other improvements let me know. I probably won't do them right away but I'll keep them in mind for down the road.

You should.  Definetly.  His rates are good and his work is better.

Since 9/10/2003.  In other words: One year, five months and eleven days.

Just wondering, how long has Say Anything been in existence.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

1) “Live Comment” currently not the same as what you get in final version (due to filtering out of many of the html commands).  Many sites have a Preview button, which allows you to view what it will *really* look like.

2) I’d recommend opening up the html slightly.... at leasat to include block quotes.

Anyway, those are the two that I can think of just now.  The spelling isn’t that big a thing to me, since my browser already let’s me check the spelling before submitting it.

Hmmm…

Blockquoting does work.

Though some other HTML commands are filtered out, like font commands etc.

Hats off Rob!! I am assuming the number of daily hits are steadily increasing. With the increased traffic how about bringing back “Caption of the Day” contest again. Some of those were pretty damn funny and it seems as though there are enough silly pics out there to quickly find one to caption on every day. Congrats again.

Actually the number of hits have been fluctuating.  In the lead-up to the election they were increasing rapidly.  For about a month before the election I was up around 3000 - 4000/day.  Then after the election it went down for about three weeks or so to under a thousand per day.  Since then its been picking up again and I’m right at about 2,500 a day.

Those are unique visitis, meaning that those of you who come back more than once to comment or whatever are only counted once.

The caption contest is a good idea.  I think I’ll do that.  Maybe we’ll do one over the weekend.

I was also thinking about adding on a live chat room.  Not so much to be open all the time, but to open during big events like State of the Union speeches, debates, elections...Super Bowl.  That sort of thing.

Might be fun to gather everybody up for a chat session or two.

That would be a great idea.  I’m not sure if it would get confusing or not if a lot of people were on it though.  Any way, its worth a serious try.

The live preview will display anything you throw at it… including porn images, tables, javascript, flash movies…

There is a way around this, by using fancy JavaScript to send text as you type to WordPress which processes the text as it will be displayed.  I’m looking into that.

WordPress will let you use most basic markup… I, EM, B, STRONG, A HREF=, BLOCKQUOTE.  Anything more complicated than that won’t be used by a large number of people, and if it were, comments start looking like a message board with flashing banner signatures and loud colors. Ugh.

Hey… I’m starting to finally catch up to you with visits, Rob.  I’ve had a couple days this month with over 2000 visits, and my average so far is 1737, a 90% increase over January.  It would probably help if I posted more than once or twice a day, but sometimes I just get burned out.  I don’t know how you do it, Rob… you’re a blogging machine.

I sometimes wonder how I do it too.  Heck, sometimes I wonder why I do it.
