Tampon Saves Life In Iraq

Absolutely amazing.

My son said they had to go on a mission and Marine X wanted the chapstick and lotion for the trip. He grabbed a bunch of the items out of his care package and got in the humvee. As luck would have it he grabbed the tampons, and My son said everyone was teasing him about "not forgetting his feminine hygiene products". My son said things were going well, and then the convoy was ambushed. He said a Marine in the convoy was shot. He said the wound was pretty clean, but it was deep. He said they were administering first aid but couldn't get the bleeding to slow down, and someone said, "Hey use Marine X's tampons". My son said they put the tampon in the wound. At this point my son profoundly told me, "Mom did you know that tampons expand?" ) "Well, yeah!". They successfully slowed the bleeding and got the guy medical attention. When they went to check on him later the surgeon told them, "You guys saved his life". If you hadn't stopped that bleeding he would have bled to death. My son said, "Mom, the tampons sent by the Marine Moms by mistake saved a Marines life." At this point I asked him, "Well what did you do with the rest of the tampons?" He said, "Oh, we divided them up and we all have them in our flak jackets, and I kept two for our first aid kit".

Our troops never fail to impress me.

[...] Health: Bandage Inflatable Battle Dressings   (+12, -1)  [vote for, against]Medic!High velocity weapons tend to make nasty holes in things… people, fuel tanks, vehicles (just ask Unca Rummy Bear), etc. The Battle Tampon (Inflatable Battle Dressing) is a one-size-fits-all device: absorbent, inflatable, disinfectant, bulletproof (aramid fibres) and impregnated with clotting agents such as adrenaline and a decent dose of both novocaine and pethidine. An embedded, or even a through&through, wound can be treated immediately. Just insert the plunger, withdraw and pull the string to inflate. The absorbent coating clears up most of the liquid contamination while the other agents go to work on clotting and infection. 24 hours grace, to get to a hospital, if you’re lucky. Also useful if you get a round through the fuel tank of your "Up-armored" Hummer.-- UnaBubba, Jan 21 2005Lesser tampons also save lives http://sayanythingb...-saves-life-in-iraqI could say "Baked by one platoon in Iraq" but to me, the story makes the invention better. [robinism, Jan 21 2005] Well, [Bubba], this isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It actually makes sense in the real world (by the way, is Roland off sick?). I should definitely stock my Hummer with crates of these. Or, I would if I had a Hummer. [...]

[...] (Hat-tip to Say Anything) King of Fools | 1/03/2005 - 07:45 PM | 2 Comments | 0 Trackbacks Rumsfeld Victor Davis Hanson expresses his opinion on the proposed sacking of SecDef Rumsfeld:  In an army replete with Bradleys and Abramses, no one could have known before Iraq that Hummers would need to become armored vehicles as well. Nevertheless all of them will be in a fleet of many thousands in less than 18 months. Would that World War II Sherman tanks after three years in the field had enough armor to stop a single Panzerfaust: At war’s end German teenagers with cheap proto-RPGs were still incinerating Americans in their “Ronson Lighters.” Although I believe it is important not to live in the past, it often lends a perspective which is helpful to the here and now.
