Two Faced

While Democrats accuse Bush of using the threat of terrorism as a "scare tactic" to acquire votes it would appear as though Democrats aren't above a few scare tactics of their own (via Instapundit).

Consider this from Right Thinking:

Rep. Jim McDermott, who represents the coffee houses of liberal downtown Seattle, was treated like a rock star at the Democratic convention. Everywhere he went, he was recognized as the man whom filmmaker Michael Moore threw Bush Bashing softballs to in "Fahrenheit 9/11." He was especially popular with a group college Democrats, who sobered up one morning when he told them: "Everybody in this room who is 17 years old should know that the likelihood of a draft in a second Bush administration is almost a certainty."

Now consider this via Rep. McDermott's website:

Congressman Jim McDermott has announced his co-sponsorship of Congressman Charles Rangel's legislation to reinstate the military draft and other forms of national service. The bill would require Americans between 18 and 26 to serve two years in the military or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security.

You're reading that right. Rep. McDermott is using the possibility of the draft's reinstatement to scare voters away from Bush while supporting legislation that would not only reinstate the draft but would also make military service (or civilian service at the least) mandatory for America's youth.

I guess Rep. McDermott's stance on the draft depends on which group of people he's talking in front of.

[...] I remember back during the election when Democrats like Jim McDermott were busy traveling the country and telling young people that the re-institution of the draft was almost a certainty should President Bush get re-elected. Now, more than a year into the President’s second term, there is no indication that the draft is going to be resurected or even that such a thing is being considered. [...]
