Conspiracy

I heard about this article while listening to Rush Limbaugh on my way to a job earlier this afternoon.

New York Daily News - Fringe elements are hoping to spark major disruptions at the Republican National Convention with a series of sneaky tricks - including fooling bomb-sniffing dogs on trains bound for Penn Station, the Daily News has learned.

Internet-using anarchists are telling would-be troublemakers to decoy specially trained Labrador retrievers with gunpowder or ammonium nitrate-laced tablets in a bid to halt trains or even spur the evacuation of Madison Square Garden.

Top cops are girding against the attempt to foil strong anti-terrorist strategies aimed at protecting conventiongoers - including President Bush - as well as peaceful protesters during the Aug. 30 to Sept. 2 GOP fete...

The dog decoy ploy is the among most insidious in the fringe groups' bag of tricks - which includes throwing marbles under the hooves of police horses and using slingshots to pelt the animals.

The people advocating for these disruptions should be rounded up and arrested. Its one thing to disagree with the Republican party and to protest their convention. Its quite another to endanger tens of thousands of people by deliberately interfering with security forces who are there to ensure the safety of everybody.

What if there were a real terrorist threat present the day of the convention and it was missed because one of these jackasses were trying to disrupt the convention? I don't care what your political ideology is, there is no excuse for this kind of behavior.

Rush parlayed this story into a good point about the Department of Homeland Security's idea to delay the elections in case of a terrorist attack. Rush said that a plan in which the elections would be delayed in the event of a terrorist attack would only be an invitation for domestic political zealots on both sides of the political spectrum to stage a false alarm or even a full-on terrorist attack in order to delay the election should their candidate be losing. I agree with that.

Remember that this country was able to have an election during the Civil War, quite possibly the most turbulent times this country has ever faced. If we could put on a national election then we could put one on in the aftermath of a contemporary terrorist attack.

[...] So? I’m not quite sure why this is a news article… The job of CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) is to prevent terrorist actions from taking place, whether they be foreign or domestic born. And terrorism isn’t just confined to bombs, either. Personally, any group that would intentionally try to disable the use of bomb sniffing dogs and throw marbles under the hooves of horses at a crowded venue like the RNC Convention last yearin an effort to cause mass confusion and concern is involving itself in domestic terrorism and the FBI SHOULD be watching these people. [...] “We never meant to hurt you, we just wanted to draw attention to the horrible atrocities being committed by your government in Iraq” will become the party line for these folks. They’ll liken their little bombing plot to little more than a stunt pulled by an ant-war protester (kind of like rolling marbles under the hooves of police horses of planting traces of bomb materials to be detected by bomb-sniffing dogs). Which is easy for them to do now since their bombs didn’t go off and we have no idea of the extent of damage they wished to cause with their bombs. The terror apologists among us will no doubt leap to believe these claims and excuse the actions of these men since, as we all know, the real enemies are the soldiers in Iraq. [...]
